Overview

In 1990, Edmund Bourne published The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook, a self-help guide that won the Benjamin Franklin Book Award for Excellence in Psychology and became the standard work in the field. What readers of that book didn't know was that Bourne had serious problems with anxiety himself -- an obsessive-compulsive disorder that became completely debilitating a few years earlier.

Bourne fought back. He practiced all of the healing techniques described in his Workbook, including relaxation, physical exercise, self-talk, and good nutrition, and supplemented these with appropriate medication. but the persistence of his problem as well as an escalating cycle of burnout and recovery led him to make a total commitment to healing. Today, he lives serenely, with a renewed sense of optimism.

In Healing Fear, Bourne explains the measures he finally took to overcome his problem, and shows readers everywhere how to uproot even the most enacious anxiety disorder. He stresses the importance of the basic methods presented in his Workbook, which include the whole range of cognitive-behavioral strategies, from visualization to desensitization. But he goes further, describing the additional steps that really made the difference for him: radically simplifying his life (he moved to a small town, tossed out the television, got rid of stuff he didn't use, and started working out of his home); developing a capacity for self-observation; cultivating his spiritual side (he learned to let go and trust in a higher power); affirming the possibility of an ultimate recovery; and learning to love unconditionally.

Filled with proven, practical advice as well as hard-won wosdom, Healing Fear is an indispensable guide for anyone who suffers from panic, phobias, obsessions, acute stress, or other anxiety disorders. It is an inspiring account of a personal journey and a vital complement to the author's Anxiety and Phobia Workbook.
