Also called myomas, fibromyomas, or leiomyomas, fibroids develop from a single smooth muscle cell in the uterus and vary in size and shape. These two practical, easy-to-read guides offer information on the different types of fibroids and the options for treating them. In Healing Fibroids, Warshowsky, a practicing obstetrician/ gynecologist and director of the Women's Program at Beth Israel Hospital's Center for Health and Healing in New York, and Oumano, a certified yoga teacher and bodywork practitioner, combine Western medicine and holistic methods to point the way to optimal health and the avoidance of surgery. After a brief look at surgical procedures and the relationship of hormones and the menstrual cycle to fibroids, they devote chapters to diet, supplements, herbal remedies, exercise, emotional healing, and the effects of environmental toxins, especially xenoestrogens. Skilling, a marketing executive and writer in New York, wrote her first book, Fibroids: The Complete Guide to Taking Charge of Your Physical, Emotional and Sexual Well-Being, when she was first diagnosed with fibroids and could find little information on the subject. She also explores the role of diet, exercise, and emotional well-being in managing fibroids. Arranged by day for the first week after diagnosis, by week for the first month, and by month for the remaining 11 months, the chapters are each divided into two sections, called "Living" and "Learning." The "Living" sections deal with issues and problems, while the "Learning" sections explain the more technical aspects of fibroids. Skilling provides practical tips, such as how to chart the growth of the fibroid and what to wear when you leave the hospital should you need surgery. Readers will find information on current research and medication, the pros and cons of various types of surgery, and hints on diet and lifestyle changes, including exercise and stress management. While both guides are useful, Skilling's arrangement is superior. Her table of contents provides good access points, and the glossary, selected resources, and list of bibliographic references are a definite plus.     Amazing and Jam-packed full of great information...

    I am so pleased and impressed by how much thought and detail went into the making of this book. There are so many things covered, and covered in detail, it goes beyond just the fibroid issue. I have had fibroids for years, and happened to run across this book and thought to get it just to read about what happens to them over time. I was shocked to find that fibroids grow under conditions other than high estrogen times such as pregnacy. It is a real eye opener for me that I need to make some pretty serious changes in my life to prevent a worsening of my condition. I believe this book is a wise investment for any woman, no matter if she has been diagnosed with fibroids or not. Its about keeping your hormones balanced through proper nourishment, physical activities like meditation and exercise like yoga, and so much more. It is exciting also to know that through these techniques and changes in lifestyle, one can reverse the ailments like fibroids as well as other female issues in all stages of life. My thanks to the writers who put so much though, time, and effort into this great book!

    Excellent Source

    This book is captivating and I wish the MD that performed my myomectomy would have been educated enough and suggested this book prior to surgery. Women we must empower ourselves thorugh knowledge. Now that they (fibroids) are back, I am incorporating the dietary suggestions into my life! Great book.

    An excellent comprehensive approach

    Dr. Warshowsky has written a book that's informative and accessible. It combines the best of Western medicine and holistic/complementary resources, which is wonderful because there is so much misinformation abounding about "alternative" medicine. Knowing that Dr. Warshowsky is a board-certified ob/gyn who's affiliated with a prestigious medical institution lends credibility and authority to his holistic approaches. I recommend this book to any woman with fibroids. Additionally, any woman who wants a picture of holistic medicine at its best should read this book, even if she does not have fibroids

    I only read the sample of this book and I could not put it down! I am currently having a problem with fibroids and am constantly being told to have a hysterectomy because I am approaching menopause age. The story of the first patient is so similar to mine, I immediately felt relieved to know how common it is and that I can consider other alternatives. I am eager to read the rest of the book and will recommend it to everywoman I know who also suffers. Knowledge is power my sisters!
