I had the privilege of ARC reading Healing Hearts by Liz Crowe.

This book will release on January 1st and will launch the new Challenge series for Decadent Publishing. The series will be made of stories where the "challenge" must take a central role in the character's romance. Well, let me say hats-off to Ms. Crowe; she took this challenge and crafted a powerfully emotional, gut wrenching and heartwarming story....

When she isn't sweating inventory and sales figures for the brewery, she can be found writing, editing or sweating promotional efforts for her latest publications.

Her groundbreaking romance subgenre, “Romance for Real Life,” has gained thousands of fans and followers who are interested less in the “HEA” and more in the “WHA” (“What Happens After?”)

Her beer blog a2beerwench.com is nationally recognized for its insider yet outsider views on the craft beer industry. Her books are set in the not-so-common worlds of breweries, on the soccer pitch and in high-powered real estate offices. Don’t ask her for anything “like” a Budweiser or risk painful injury.

Reviewed by Shyla Book provided by the publisher for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book I love Ms. Crowe. Her strong women, witty humor, and real to life romance always get to me. But, Healing Hearts certainly put me through the wringer! The horrific events and damage that followed after were too real. It makes you want to hold your loved ones tight, and be thankful for every moment you get with them. Abby is an ex divorcee up to her ears in debt, thanks to her scheming ex-husband. Determined to move forward with her life, pay off her bills, and go after her lifetime dream of being a nurse she plods on working hours at a coffee house, and getting in touch with herself. Kind, intuitive, and strong, she had me rooting for her from page one. I love a woman who gets up when life knocks them down, grows and comes out from the fire better for the burn. It’s during her shifts that she notices, tall, blonde, gorgeous, and deeply wounded, Jay. The silent man orders the same thing every day, goes to his usual corner with a newspaper he never reads, and leaves some time later after staring into the distance. When Jay shows up upset, and crashing from low blood sugar after a run, her life takes an unexpected turn. Jay’s a man whose lived through an event, no one should every have to carry away. Just thinking about it makes my stomach and my heart ache. When it comes to tragic stricken heroes, he comes quite close to taking the cake. Ms. Crowe never flinched, turned away, or watered down the ugly truth, and that made the story. A zombie, he’s lives for the past year in a hazy cloud of grief and self-loathing. Until a brilliant ray of sunshine entered his life, and refused to let the gloom take him once again. It had a name, Abby. The exotic beauty with the soulful eyes and aura of calm that seeps into his soul like a soothing balm entrances him. Drawn to the woman who brings his dead soul back to life he fights against the demons that rage inside him and the hope struggling to grow from the ashes of his past. Jay is sweet, tormented, amazing and a hot mess all at the same time. I’m impressed with the maneuvering Ms. Crowe did to bring him around. The passion between them is volcanic, but the deep connection they form is the real work of beauty. While this story isn’t for the faint of heart, the content is graphic, violent, and utterly heartbreaking. It is a darn good, well-written romance.

Healing Hearts By Liz Crowe Blurb: Jay Longmire had it all--a successful business, a beautiful wife, two loving children. While Abby's fierce independence forces them both to acknowledge the deeper relationship they both desire, but that remains just out of reach. Two wounded souls meet at a coffee shop and find a way to heal each other. The horror of Jay’s loss was heartbreaking. He deserves a happily ever after. Abby has an empathetic side but she’s also strong and determined to reach her dreams. I loved the interaction between the characters. Ms. Crowe draws you into their lives and makes you cheer for their happiness. All of Ms. Crowe’s stories remind you about what’s important in life and show “real” people…people you’re friends with or wish to know. While this story has it’s dark moments, the message of healing is very clear. A recommended read for lovers of stories with heart and heat!

Healing Hearts This is a short book about Abby who works in a coffee shop and her mystery customer Jay, whilst she thinks that he is hot it turns out that he has a tragedy in his past that may be impossible to overcome. This was a great read but I have to say that Jay's past is really not for the faint of heart- it was one of those moments in a book where I forget it is fiction and want to give the character a big hug as well as feeling faintly queasy!! It is well written with Jay's reactions to trying to get his life going again being very moving and although there is a romance it seemed to take a back seat to the story. I would give this book 4 of of 5 stars Petra

Grief and tragedy and hatred are only for a time. Goodness, remembrance and love have no end. As a personal preference, I have never been a big fan of novellas. Many times I feel the story is just getting started and then it ends leaving me speechless and wanting more. However, since I am a huge Liz Crowe fan and she personally asked me to read her new novella, Healing Hearts, I made an exception. Healing Hearts is the first novella from the Challenge Series, which consists of stories where the “challenge” must take a central role in the characters’ romance. The main hero of Healing Hearts is Jay Longmire. And the title “hero” doesn’t even come close to describing his character. The man watched helplessly as his wife was brutally raped and killed as well as his son. His daughter survived the attacks but remained on life support in a coma. Words cannot even describe the hurt and sorrow that I felt for Jay, which is all a reflection on the incredible writing of Liz Crowe. I could feel Jay’s pain. I could feel his sorrow. And I could understand why he didn’t want to live anymore. A central theme ran through Jay’s mind throughout most of the book—that he had somehow failed to protect his family. And isn’t that the goal of most men? To protect and provide for their family. Jay spends his days in a coffee shop where Abigail Powers works as a barista. He goes into the coffee shop every single day just so he can see Abby’s smile. He always orders the double skim latte, but he never talks to anyone. He just stares out the window. Abby has her own family issues causing her a different kind of pain. But she takes on extra shifts just so she can see the blue-eyed, model gorgeous Jay. Abby has one goal in life and that is to attend the University of Michigan nursing program. A chance encounter eventually brings Jay and Abigail together outside the coffee shop where they are physically attracted to one another but both have so many baggage. At this point in their lives, they just want and need the physical release of sex. No commitments. No expectations. Just to be there for each other as friends…at least that’s what they thought. "Her innate soothing nature worked its magic even without words. She reached out and took both his hands. Her skin felt warm against his and every inch of him ached to hold her, to fold her into his arms and never let her go. But the baggage, he couldn’t share it. It was too much to ask of anyone." There are scenes in this book which ripped my heart out. I couldn’t help but think about the people who have experienced this type of tragedy in their life. To be that numb to society. I know that I have my faith, but I don’t know what Jay’s religious background is so I’m not sure what kept him going day after day except for the fact that he still had his daughter on life support. This story is incredible, powerful, and emotional, and it will leave you with hope that love does conquer all and that grief and tragedy are only for a time. I would also like to go on record saying that besides the fact that I don’t typically read novellas, I also don’t normally read drama-intense/sad books. I like the traditional books filled with hearts and flowers and romance—not murders and sadness. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much I truly enjoyed the storyline in this novella but definitely was not surprised by the talented writing of Liz Crowe. She has definitely raised the bar! Great job Liz. I look forward to the next novella in the Challenge Series! (Yes, that means I will read it!) :)

The first book in the Challenge Series Healing Hearts was written by Liz Crowe, author of Stewart Realty Series, as well as many other wonderful stand alone books. Healing Hearts was a wonderfully written story of a man struggling with the horrible aftermath of a family tragedy. I loved this story from the very beginning! You just can't go wrong with a Liz Crowe book, so much emotion, makes her books seem so realistic. Enjoy this story, I highly recommend it!
