Overview

Life gets a lot harder for Amish midwife Kristi Lapp when a buggy wreck lands her in the hospital and leaves her with a pronounced limp. Among her biggest concerns is the well-being of her dog, Chinook, as she is no longer able to keep up with the high-energy Siberian husky. Adding insult to injury, she fears she’ll never marry for love, for what man would willingly wed a woman who needs help with even the most basic of household tasks? Shane Zimmerman moved to Seymour for a fresh start. The veterinarian is still reeling from the loss of his young wife, who died in childbirth—an aneurysm, the autopsy determined, but he still blames the midwife and the herbal remedies she administered. He meets his next-door neighbor, Kristi, when he discovers her wrecked buggy and takes her to the hospital. Eager to deepen the friendship that forms between them, he offers to take care of exercising her dog. But the harsh words of Kristi’s father discourage him from pursuing a relationship further—for the time being. Shane isn’t Amish, although his grandparents were, and Ira Lapp would rather his daughter marry an aging Amish widower than a young Englischer. Despite all the forces that would keep them apart, Kristi and Shane can’t deny the strong attraction between them. So, their on-again, off-again relationship persists, as Kristi submits to physical therapy for her leg and Shane reevaluates his reasons for being Englisch. But will they find a way to stay together? Or are their differences too divisive to resolve?

What a surprising ending! I love it. Kristi Lapp, an Amish midwife, and Shane Zimmerman, an English veterinarian new to the area, meet when he notices her buggy turned over in a ditch. He stops to make sure no one is hurt and discovers Kristi. She's unconscious and he calls to have her transported to the hospital. Her parents are out of town so he stays with her daily until they return. When her parents return and her daed sees an attraction forming he demands that Shane stay away from Kristi. Shane tries to stay away from Kristi but it seems circumstances keep throwing them together. Kristi has a Siberian husky, Chinook, who needs exercise daily so Shane takes over doing that since Kristi can't walk and will need a lot of therapy. Even though they are each falling for the other, there are some things that are keeping them apart, she's Amish and he's English with Amish grandparents, neither one knows if they want to 'change' or if they want to ask the other to 'change'. Next is the fact that she's a midwife, he blames a midwife for the death of his wife and baby. Finally Kristi's daed is determined to marry her off to a good Amish man, even if he's already had three wives and has many children. I had been wanting this book for a long time, as well as the next two in the series. When I won the third book I mentioned that I was going to buy the first two and Laura was kind enough to send them to me, she really blessed me by doing so. I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to reading the last two, Surrendered Love and Awakened Love. I would highly recommend this series to anyone that like reading Amish books. Oh, did I mention the fact that I was VERY surprised at the ending, I think you will be too. Wonderful job Laura!

The first book in The Amish of Webster County series, Healing Love, is captivating. Well written characters, strong romantic pull and the conflict of Amish and Englischer kept my attention to the very end. I found this book hard to put down and could not figure out which way the story was going to go. Would Kristi choose to leave her Amish family and be shunned? Or would Shane give up the life he was used to and turn Amish in order to be with Kristi? The author surprised me and kept me guessing till the end. I recommend this book to any fans of Amish fiction.

In a freak Amish buggy accident Amish midwife Kristi Lapp was catapulted from her buggy down a steep embankment and into a ditch. Shortly after the accident Shane Zimmerman, the local non-Amish veterinarian, spotted the wrecked buggy but no sign of a horse or driver. Upon discovering Kristi unresponsive, with a seriously broken leg that was bleeding profusely, he summoned an ambulance and followed Kristi to the hospital. Her badly broken leg required surgery which left Kristi with a pronounced limp, causing her a number of difficulties in her daily life and numerous concerns for her future. Kristi's parents were in Florida at the time of the accident, so Shane visited her each day in the hospital as she recuperated. Upon discovering they were next-door neighbors Shane took on the responsibilities for the care and exercising of Kristi's dog. Shane had suffered his own losses before moving to Webster County, and was working through his own healing process as Kristi worked toward healing from her accident. A forbidden attraction developed between them which further complicated their lives. Shane's personal involvement in Kristi's life was not accepted by Kristi's father, and Shane was forbidden to see Kristi as more than a friend. Their feelings for each other had grown strong, and their obstacles were numerous. Laura V. Hilton develops strong characters a reader can relate to and grow to love. She brings her characters to life, making the reader feel the emotions that her characters experience. This author knows her material well and writes an accurate depiction of both the Amish way of life and the complications that come with an attraction to a non-Amish individual. The plot moved along at a great pace, and each new development in the story is a surprise. I had a great deal of difficulty putting this book down because of new developments that continued to pique my curiosity. This is a beautifully written Amish fiction book, the first in the series of The Amish of Webster County. Waiting for the next in the series is going to be a challenge! Healing Love was the first book I have read by this author, and I can tell you in all honesty, it won't be the last! This book was provided by Whitaker House for review purposes. I really enjoyed this book. I read somewhere else that someone thought it was predictable.... and while there are parts you HOPE will turn out a certain way, Laura keeps it to where to you really don't KNOW that it'll turn out that way. If I had KNOWN whether or not it would work out, I would not have stayed awake until the wee hours of the morning to figure it out. I think part of the reason I enjoyed this book so much is that it wasn't your average, normal Amish story, but it did have all the parts of a good Christian romance -- a handsome, SWEET guy, a likable girl and circumstances that seem daunting. It was the best Amish book I've read in a while!!

Shane Zimmerman had an Amish name but he was not Amish, even though he lived in Amish country. In fact his father had left the Amish to marry his mother, and while he had no aspirations to be Amish, he did love his Amish grandparents, and he loved working with the animals on the Amish farms, where he was called upon for his services as a veterinarian. A young widower, he carried around a grudge against the vocation of midwives and their practice of using herbal treatments after his wife dies during her pregnancy. He blamed the red raspberry tea she had drank, but it truth it was an aneurysm that killed her. A reckless driver has left midwife Kristi Lapp laying critically injured along the side of the road. She was sure she was dreaming about the good looking young man who had rescued her, but was surprised when he kept showing up at the hospital to visit her, and was also surprised to realize he was her new neighbor, the vet. The attraction between them is measurable and the sparks fly every time they are near each other. Her father Ira is determined to put a stop to all of this foolishness, he cannot loose another child going over the fence. Laura V. Hilton is such a talented author, she pulls this story together and leaves you ready for more! I loved these new characters in this new series and while it stands alone, you have to hope we will meet Shane and Kristi again. A beautiful story, that you will not be able to put down! 336 pages US $10.99 5 stars This book was provided for review purposes only, no payment was received for this review.
