Overview

At Harvard Medical School's Division of Behavioral Medicine, Alice Domar, Ph.D., has developed singular, scientifically sound mind-body methods for women and demonstrated their effectiveness with groundbreaking research. Thus, Healing Mind, Healthy Woman offers a new repertoire of therapeutic methods to two broad groups of women: those who wish to protect and enhance their health, and those who are suffering with specific health problems. Healing Mind, Healthy Woman first describes a spectrum of techniques for stress management and wellness for all women. Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The director of the women's health programs at Harvard Medical School's Division of Behavioral Medicine, Domar has closely observed the effect of emotions on the physical health of women. Aided by science writer Dreher, she here "describes scientific research showing that all these mind-body methodsrelaxation, cognitive therapy, emotional expression, and social supportyield measurable physical and psychological benefits." Although too long and too repetitive for readers who are at all familiar with the power that the mind has on the body, the book's organization makes sense for readers who are beginning to explore the connection. Part I lays out the general background on the various kinds of "mind-body medicine." Part II applies these approaches to specific case studies on PMS, infertility, menopause, breast and pelvic cancer and other problems. The overlapping inherent in this structure, added to Domar's reiteration of her theoretical position when discussing details of the case studies, makes for heavy reading. Even so, readers will find hope, reassurance and plenty of motivation in Domar's presentation.
Library Journal
An all-purpose woman's wellness guide that deemphasizes traditional approaches.
Kathleen Hughes
In this important book, Dr. Domar, director of Harvard Medical School's division of behavorial medicine, demonstrates the effective techniques for stress management and wellness that she has developed over the years. Domar realized early on that psychological factors can seriously affect health and recovery from illness, and she has dedicated her career to helping women use the mind-body connection to regain control of their health and well-being. Her book, written with coauthor Dreher, includes therapeutic techniques both for women who wish to protect and enhance their health and for those who are suffering from specific health problems. Specific programs for infertility, miscarriage, and menopause are described. Filled with "stories of patients who have achieved great success by exploiting the" mind-body connection, this account -- used in conjunction with conventional medical assistance -- will prove a valuable resource for women.
From Barnes & Noble
This guide to using the mind-body connection to manage stress and take control of your life is based on methods used at Harvard Medical School's Division of Behavioral Medicine. Focusing on two groups of women -- those who wish to protect and enhance their health and those who are suffering with specific health problems -- it describes such stress-reducing exercises as PMR (Progressive Muscle Relaxation), Guided Imagery, and Yoga and addresses such health factors as PMS, infertility, menopause, cancer, and endometriosis.
