Overview

Every 20 minutes a child is diagnosed with a disease on the autism spectrum--including ADD, learning disabilities, Asperger’s, Autism, and PDD--making it today's most common childhood disability. While the medical establishment treats autism as a psychiatric condition and prescribes behaviorally based therapies, Dr. Julie A. Buckley argues that it is a physiological disease that must be medically treated.

Part personal story of her battle to heal her autistic daughter, part guide for parents, Healing Our Autistic Children explains simply and accessibly the new treatments and diets that have already proven effective for many families. Told through the case studies of her patients, the book is divided into four typical visits to Dr. Buckley’s pediatric practice so that parents can see the progression of initial treatment. Written in a warmly engaging voice, parents new to the diagnosis will:

  • learn about clinical treatments that work
  • understand how different foods affect the body and how to begin implementing diets
  • learn to navigate the medical system and advocate for their child
  • bridge the communication gap with their pediatrician
  • discover that recovery is possible

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
As the mother of a child with autism as well as a pediatrician, Buckley is especially qualified to speak to the efficacy of medical treatments for autism. Here, she explains different options and how they work for the parents of children with autism-spectrum disorders (ASD). The book is set up in six chapters, each representing a visit to the child's doctor as a way to walk readers through beginning treatment and managing ongoing treatments. Buckley also includes anecdotes of her own patients and their health when they came to her, and she updates their progress throughout. Also included are "Action Lists," resources, and references for further information. VERDICT This reviewer wishes she'd had this clearly written book 12 years ago. Essential for parents of newly diagnosed children as a way to learn about medical treatments or as a guide to start treatment. It would also benefit pediatricians who are encountering more and more patients with ASD and have parents with questions about what can be done to help their child.—Lisa M. Jordan, Johnson Cty. What a God-send this book is!

Healing Our Autistic Children by Julie Buckley, MD

I went to my first DAN conference at Cherryhill, NJ in 1998. I remember telling friends at the time, that my brain felt like it was actually swollen from concentrating so hard trying to absorb all the information presented. I've attended 4-5 DAN conferences since then and, each time, by the end of the sessions, I have felt the same way.

I have a 17 year old son who has, over the years, significantly recovered from his very apparent Autism symptoms. In order to take on the quest of helping our son become the best person he could be, I had to read book, after book, after book, after book. For several years, if it wasn't a book or article related to Autism interventions, I just didn't read it. After a while, I felt I might be able to successfully pass challenge exams to pursue my Ph.D. in Biochemistry (there's the possibility of some slight exaggeration here - but not by much)!

If you have a child newly diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or if you are newly interested in pursuing biomedical interventions for your child with ASD, this is the first book you want to read. Julie makes complex scientific information easy to digest and understand. It's amazing to me to have all this information consolidated into an understandable form and a workable time schedule.

You'll find no finer companion to go on this journey with you than Julie Buckley. She's been caring for our son since 2005 and he continues to make meaningful gains. Her technical skills as a diagnostician and her level of expertise as a medical professional are impressive. However, it is her tenacity and the depth of her compassion for her patients and their families that are truly awesome. This and much more, is clearly evident in Julie's book. She is one of my angels.

I do have one small note of caution for any reader of this book should you ever be in contact with Julie about your child with ASD. Beware - she shamelessly solicits wedding invitations!

Dr. Buckley has achieved virtually the impossible by taking a complex issue (autism, biomedical interventions, and recovery) and making it understandable by using precise language and analogies.

Dr. Buckley's book should be the first book a parent should buy after an autism dignosis. I have read hundred of books about autism that are based on the different theraputic and educational approaches and biomedical interventions. This book was by far the easiest to read and understand.

Dr. Buckley has a gift for using everyday events or analogies to explain the complexities of autism. For example, she uses the analogy of a quarterback and a football teacm to explain how the body should function. She tells of a gifted quarterback who receives much attention and coaching, but the rest of the team is ignored and pretty much on their own. It doesn't matter how great the quarterback is if the rest of the team can't play with him or catch the balls he throws. Every member of the team is important and has a specific job to do. If you imagine that the brain is the quarterback making the calls and telling the organs and systems what to do, and you imagine that the players (digestive tract, blood cells, etc) are supposed to get their orders from the quarterback and then follow the instructions, you can easily see what would happen to the team and game if even one player misinterpreted or ignored those instructions. This book is filled with easy to understand explanations and illustrations to make it a user-friendly guide for the biomedical approach to restoring health.

Not only does she make autism and biomedical treatments understandable, she also includes personal stories to illustrate her points. She explains some of her patients' reactions to treatments, supplements, and life experiences. She successfully added a personal factor that helps the reader to connect. I found myself wanting to read on to find out more about that patient and their story.

I would strongly urge parents to give this book to family members, teachers, therapists, and general pediatricians. Everyone that comes into contact with your child should have a simple understanding of your medical plan to restore your child's health and recover your child from autism. The book is a delightful read, and everyone that works with your child should have the same objective--recovery! For too long the autism community has been divided between traditionalists and biomedical interventionists. It is my hopes that this book will build bonds and bridge the gaps between two diverse schools of thought. Everyone should be working towards restoring a child's health and recovery from autism!
