    Literally Saved My Life

I read this book in 1992 when, at the age of 27, I woke up one day and crawled under a table because I could no longer figure out what was wrong with me and was so overwhelmed with even being able to put on my clothes for work. My parents came and found me. I moved back home. Soon I found a psychologist near where I lived and through the course of 9 months of *intensive* therapy she gave me the book 'Healing The Shame That Binds You' to read. Reading this book made so many pieces fall into place for me because I was trying so hard to figure out what was wrong. No, the book alone didn't heal me, but it gave me insight into what I needed to do to get better. It doesn't matter if your an adult child of an alcoholic, or an abuse victim, or some type of addict, please read this book if you truly want to find a way to help yourself. It's not about blaming others, but about healing your *self*. I'm now 39 and it hasn't been an easy 12 years to get here, but now I have a new career, a beautiful wife and I'm able to be happy living my life, rather than being afraid of it. Please read this book if you truly want to find a way to help yourself.

Review of Healing the Shame that Binds You

This book has saved my life! I am currently still using it and has helped me beyond words! It not only details how the problem develops and the sources, but also gives excellent exercises and strategies for reducing the problem of toxic shame. It's also based on the author's personal experiences along with the research which puts it on a real personal level and shows immense recovery. I highly recommend this book and suggest it be read over and over again and kept as a major resource.

    I Also Recommend:

Healing the Shame That Binds You

This book is both informative and, for it's time, innovative. Bradshaw makes relevant the past traumatic events in one's life which has lead to the crippling hold Shame has over them. A great source/resource for anyone who is or has anyone in their life being held back by self-shaming actions.

    Deepen your awareness of Self...

John Bradshaw's book on Healing The Shame is masterfully written and is composed of two parts. The first part lays the foundation for what is toxic shame and why we might have it. The second part is chuck full of exercises to alleviate the shame we carry. John used personal experiences to support his contentions. I found his book extremely beneficial in understanding the shame I acquired in childhood.

Don't understand the three star ratings for this book. JB does an amazing job at getting to the heart of dysfunctional families and how family dynamics make us feel ashamed.  He is clear, and is so raw that sometimes I even cried while reading it, because so many things he said brought me right back to when I was a child experiencing craziness, and I had no one to turn to.  Great book.

    Good and bad

parts of this book are helpful and other parts not so much. received some good advice while other advice made me think there was no right way to raise a child without shaming and scarring the child for life.

Insights into Dysfunction and Promotion of Healing

We're all dysfunctional as human beings, some way more glaring than others--like my boss, for instance. Most people continue to abuse others, and others continue to let others abuse them. A few people, very few, seek knowledge to overcome these dysfunctions by seeking knowledge from individuals--I would say gifted--who can teach us about these things, and it is the first step to healing to recognize and name these forms of dysfunctional behaviors mostly caused by childhood traumatic events, having seriously dysfunctional parents, and their parents, and the cycle never ceases. The teachings and insights into human behavior in this book can I think, help those who have the insight enough to seek help. Application to ones' own life can change one's own life, and thereby help change the world. I'd like to see this book (and others along the same theme) to be required reading in high school and college curriculums.
