Children's Literature - Julia Beiker
Have you ever wanted to ask how your body works and why it does things and then actually find out the answer? In the book, Health, the format leads readers through the entire body and allows them to discover the answers to many tough questions, including how smoking and drinking affect your body. What causes asthma, and how does taking the entire dosage of antibiotic keep the bacteria from growing and making someone sick again? It also talks about how our body keeps germs from entering through the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, and why it might be a good idea not to completely remove the wax from your ears. Most teenagers and even adults go through outbreaks of acne. Inside this book, acne is broken down into how it comes to be and what can be done to stop it, including the simple use of soap and water. Many more facts and resources line the pages. The author, Celeste A. Peters, put together outstanding photographs and simple text to create an incredible reference book that can be used for all ages. Even though much of the information is basic, it still whets the appetite of any reader to take these facts and learn more. The question and answer format makes the reading easier to digest, especially when the questions are more complex, such as when the narrator is asked about autoimmune diseases. Check out the "Fast Facts" and the quiz at the back of the book. As an educator and parent, I highly recommend this book. It is part of the "Science Q & A" series. Reviewer: Julia Beiker
