Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Margaret Brackley, PhD, RN, CS (University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio)
Description: This fifth edition book explores the relationship, based on respect, between the health professional and patient. This book is divided into seven parts that focus on the context of the relationship, the two main players, communication, the relationship, and respectful interactions in various situations.
Purpose: The authors aim to "provide guidance" and "provide the tools" for developing professional relationships built on respect. To accomplish these goals they claim to help the student by "enhancing self-understanding...helping clarify the dynamics of the health professional-patient relationship," and "developing ... awareness" of the social context of this relationship. The authors have chosen and met worthy goals for their book. Building relationships on respect in the current environment would indeed improve communication between professional and patient.
Audience: The book is for readers who provide healthcare services to others. It is particularly for students with liberal arts and basic sciences background pursuing a degree in the healthcare professions. I believe any discipline could benefit from the book's structure. It includes case studies from which all professions can learn. The well-qualified authors are both doctorally prepared healthcare professionals.
Features: The book is pleasing to the eye. References are classic, appropriate in ethical arguments. Some current articles have been included. The book is fun to read. I especially liked the literary selections used to illustrate points or to introduce concepts, thus drawing on the student's liberal arts background to add a dimension of humanness to patient suffering.
Assessment: I highly recommend this book for undergraduate students in multidisciplinary or discipline-specific courses on communications in health care.
