Overview

Health research in developing countries has many facets. On one side, malaria and AIDS as main causes of morbidity and mortality are a focus for clinical and epidemiological studies. On the other side, the need for improving the health care system in general cannot be overestimated.

The book offers a survey of current and important topics of health research in developing countries. Special emphasis is placed to show that cooperation of different health research areas if of highest importance in future. In addition the CRSN (Burkina Faso) - University of Heidelberg collaboration is given as a model that allows high class research in remote areas of any developing country.

An absolutely must for all who are working in clinical, epidemiological and health systems research for and in developing countries.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Ross M. Mullner, PhD, MPH (University of Illinois at Chicago)
Description: This book chronicles the medical and public health research efforts between the Institute of Tropical Hygiene at the University of Heidelberg in Germany and the Nouna Health Research Center in the West African country of Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta), one of the poorest countries in the world, has a high population density and few natural resources. It is also vulnerable to harsh climatic conditions such as recurring drought.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to describe in detail the results of the collaboration between the University of Heidelberg and the Nouna Health Research Center.
Audience: Graduate students in public health, particularly those interested in international community health and infectious disease epidemiology, would be interested in this book. The book also would be of interest to students in African study programs.
Features: The book consists of five large chapters that include an introduction, clinical research, epidemiological studies, health services research, and biochemistry-based health services research.
Assessment: This book is well written, well illustrated, and is thought provoking. It is an important reminder of the many medical and public health problems (i.e., high infant mortality, low life expectancy at birth, and high adult prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS) found in many poor developing countries. At the same time, it also provides hope that collaboration between wealthy and poorer nations can provide knowledge and lead to great improvements in health and a better life.
