Description: This book provides a broad, basic understanding of health, safety, and nutritional issues of children in group care and early childhood settings. It comes with a CD that can be used for teaching and learning activities.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide current research and developments in the field of early childhood for new learners in early childhood education and nursing and, specifically, for those working in early childhood settings with young children and their families. As more children are cared for in out-of-home environments than ever before, the book is extremely relevant. The author has provided concise and complete information that is easily accessible to all providers of such care.
Audience: The author, degreed in both nursing and education, applies an interdisciplinary approach to the care and nurturing of young children and families, which strengthens the message. She demonstrates a wide breadth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the interaction between health and education in the early years and the foundations for learning and success in children's lives. It is a very good resource for students and practitioners working in the areas of community pediatrics and early childhood education.
Features: Prevention, health promotion, and risk reduction are covered, as well as specific methods of screening and assessment, forms that are useful in early childhood settings. A broad discussion of safety includes a well researched section on child abuse and maltreatment. The sections on nutrition and feeding are well presented, and the author provides a good discussion of feeding relationships and their importance for obesity prevention, a critical need in this era.
Assessment: This book will be an excellent addition to my own practice library. It contains information from several fields of study, and can be used as a field text when in the childhood nursing clinical setting with students. The updated information on current issues in child health, such as obesity prevention and school vending machine recommendations, is timely.

Meet the Author

Lynn R. Marotz (Ph.D., M.Ed., B.S.N.) served as the health and safety coordinator and associate director of the Edna A. Hill Child Development Center (University of Kansas) for 35 years. She has worked closely with students in the Early Childhood teacher education program and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Applied Behavioral Science, including issues in parenting, health/safety/nutrition for the young child, administration, and foundations of early childhood education. She provides frequent in-service training in first aid, safety, child abuse, and identification of children's health problems for early childhood students and community educators. In addition to authoring invited chapters in many publications and law books, she is the co-author of DEVELOPMENTAL PROFILES: PRE-BIRTH THROUGH ADOLESCENCE, MOTIVATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, and BY THE AGES (all from Cengage Learning). Her research activities focus on childhood obesity and children's health, safety, and nutrition. She has presented extensively at international, national, and state conferences and held appointments on national, state, and local committees and initiatives that advocate on the behalf of children and families.
