Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Are teens smart about their health? Do they know how to take care of their bodies and stay healthy? Being healthy covers many areas: eating right, exercise, not abusing oneself with alcohol or drugs, and emotional health. This educational book informs teens of ways to get healthy in each of these areas. For instance, kids who get more sleep are less likely to have suicidal tendencies and be less depressed. Teens need about nine hours per night of sleep, but how many teens do? In addition, this book instructs teens on specific foods, nutrients, and foods that give more energy. Did you know that an apple gives nutrients along with lots of energy? The author includes six tips for healthy eating, one of which is, by filling your plate with more fruits and veggies. Exercise and fitness is another area teens need to be aware of to stay healthy. They are urged to exercise daily through any kind of activity that makes them move. It is important to stay active to stay healthy. Alcohol can kill brain cells and tobacco can be addictive and cause cancer. The author recommends that teens abstain from both and other drugs to have better health. Not only do teens need to take care of their bodies, but they need to take care of their minds. Getting enough sleep, dealing with stress and emotions are a few of the ways to help build emotional health. After reading this informative book, teens will be more knowledgeable in ways to be healthy and stay healthy. Included are hotline numbers and websites that are helpful for teens. Teachers would benefit from using this useful book in their classroom. This book is part of the "USA Today Teen Wise Guides Lifestyle Choices" series. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
