Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of five titles in the “Understanding Nutrition: A Gateway to Physical & Mental Health” series, this edition discusses healthy fast foods. Following an introduction on the importance of making the right food choices, the four chapters go on to discuss our obsession with fast food, the problems with fast food, what eating healthy looks like and making healthy fast food choices. The well-researched text has an appealing layout that includes color photographs, interesting and informative graphics and boxed information that focus the reader’s attention. The emphasis on the importance of forming the habit of reading the federally mandated nutrition facts on packaged foods is a plus. Two recipes for making your own healthy fast foods are included. Older elementary and middle school students will find plenty to discuss in this book, and teachers will find it inspiring for students who seem to reject discussions on healthy eating. Sources for further information and an index are included. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.; Ages 9 to 12.
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Rather than preach about good nutrition, these books offer visually appealing, conversational, and practical takes on healthy eating in a variety of settings. They address smart choices in the school cafeteria, convenience stores, restaurants, and fast-food joints, as well as eating for optimum sports and academic performance. The authors arm teens with good information on the physical and mental impact of healthy food, calorie intake, body-mass index, portion sizes, and reading labels. They also advocate a "healthy eating is a lifelong process" approach, encouraging right decisions while acknowledging that temptations exist. Readers can come to this set with little prior knowledge. The volumes are slim, but the large pages contain user-friendly graphics, text boxes, and color photos that pop. Appetizing presentations with sustenance.
