Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One in the continuing 'Spyglass" series about social studies and science designed for early readers, this book deals with personal health issues such as nutrition, hygiene, exercise, hydration and good sleep habits. Full-page color photography of children in action enhances the limited text and graded vocabulary based on "Guided Reading" principles. Basic health advice is accompanied by boxed suggestions within each health area. The information is limited so that additional resources would be needed for a full understanding of each health issue. The book does include a list of fun facts, an index, a glossary and resources for information. 2004, Compass Point Books, Ages 6 to 8.

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
In the debate over child obesity, often the message is only given to parents. With this new book, one of the "Heath and Your Body" series, the authors are trying to get the same message across to children as well. Geared mainly toward kids who are too young to choose their own diets, the book steers away from complex information instead choosing to give general and well-known tips and advice on things that kids can control. Eat more veggies. Avoid junk food. Play every day. These are topics that are easily accessible to readers and empower them to communicate with their parents on the issues. While the author welcomes the use of content vocabulary, most of the language is easy to understand whether children are reading or being read to. The effect is the book reads like true nonfiction and not a "kiddie" book, a fact that many younger kids will appreciate. The photographs are bright and colorful and invite readers into the text. The book also contains a table of contents, glossary, index and Fact Hound link. A great text to introduce young readers to healthy habits or nonfiction. Reviewer: Heather Robertson Mason
