Editorial Reviews

This resource of easily accessible information on lifestyle and health-related topics of interest to adolescents provides hundreds of capsule summaries organized under fifteen subject headings. The first volume includes nutrition, personal care and hygiene, sexuality, physical fitness, and environmental health. Volume two covers health care systems, health care careers, preventive care, over-the-counter drugs, and alternative medicine. The final volume looks at mental health, mental illness, habits and behaviors, and mental health therapies. The format for each volume is the same. Every chapter has a boxed Words to Know feature. All fifteen Words to Know sections are combined and appear at the beginning of each volume. Photographs, illustrations, and boxed sidebars enhance the text by highlighting relevant statistics, noteworthy factoids, or pertinent charts, such as how much caffeine, famous people who have battled eating disorders, or the pressure points used in reflexology. In addition, a For More Information section appears at the end of each chapter and includes a suggested list of books for further reading as well as related Web sites. Each volume concludes with a bibliography of books and Web sites used in the research for each chapter. Although wide-ranging in its coverage of topics, Healthy Living is by no means an in-depth resource. Very little attention is paid to suicide, and no mention is made of school violence. Only the ears are discussed in the paragraph on body piercing. On the other hand, this set is current enough to include information on Rohypnol (the so-called date-rape drug) and Internet addiction. Useful as a starting point for students doing research or lookingfor the questions to ask on sensitive subjects such as sexuality, eating disorders, or drugs, this reasonably priced reference is recommended for school and public libraries. 2000, UXL, Glossary. Index, Illus., Photos, Biblio., Further Reading, 439p. in 3 vols., PLB. Ages 12 to 18. Reviewer: Beth E. Andersen VOYA, February 2001 (Vol. 23, No.6)
This three-volume set covers a wide range of health-related topics and lifestyle issues for the young adult. Fifteen chapters cover nutrition, personal care and hygiene, sexuality, physical fitness, environmental health, health care systems and careers, preventive care, over-the-counter drugs, alternative medicine, mental health and illness, eating disorders, habits and behaviors, and mental health therapies. Sidebars provide interesting facts relating to a particular topic, and each volume includes a glossary collected from the "Words to Know" boxes located at the beginning of each chapter. Contains many b&w illustrations. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
