What was it like being young and gay during the closeted 1950s, the exuberant beginnings of the modern gay rights movement in the 1970s, or the frightening outbreak of HIV and AIDS in the 1980s? In this unique history, Nancy Garden uses both fact and fiction to explore just what it has meant to be young and gay in America during the last fifty years. Overview

For each decade from the 1950s on, she discusses in an essay the social and political events that shaped the lives of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people during that era. Then, in two short stories, she explores the emotional experiences of young gay people coming of age during those times, giving vivid insight into what it really felt like.

Hear Us Out! is a comprehensive and rich account of gay life, both public and private, from one of the pioneers of young adult lesbian and gay literature.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This hybrid text, a blend of alternating nonfiction and short stories, chronicles the lives of lesbians and gays in America from the 1950s to the present. Garden first exploded on the scene twenty-five years ago with Annie on My Mind (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1982/VOYA August 1982), a novel of lesbian awakening and romance that opened the door in young adult literature for other writers' homosexual protagonists. This collection takes readers through time in snapshots from the lives of gay teens struggling with their own identity issues and the changing-or not so changing-pressures of society. The book is divided into sections by decade, and Garden uses a blend of historical fact and memory to reconstruct the state of gay life within the societal framework of the time. The stories that follow each decade's history give readers a look inside the minds and lives of very normal adolescents whose awakening sexuality is usually in conflict with the values of their homes and communities. In poignant and at times heartbreaking stories, Garden's protagonists handle life's pressures in a variety of ways, some overcoming fear and prejudice and some succumbing to the same. The message is clear, though. The gay revolution continues today as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) persons still fight for acceptance, equal treatment under the law, and protection from discrimination.
School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up
No one can question Garden's ability to pen a breathy, urgent lesbian romance full of passion and strife. Her first offering in this anthology is nothing short of that: two girls, Angela and Elizabeth, eke out a swoony romance in letters to one another in 1952, a time when their relationship would never be accepted. In a later selection, two boys journey to New York City for a date-only to witness the Stonewall Riots. And, in another, a correspondence between two queer cousins ends in asphyxiation, a potent reminder of the days when most LGBTQ teen books ended with a car crash. This well-intended compilation is prefaced by a historical record of the climate of each decade since 1950. But, interestingly enough, the early stories are the most fully realized with well-rounded characters finding real love in spite of their circumstances. Many of the others feel trapped in the decades within which they're embedded. All of the stories are identity-based: teens discover who they are, who their friends and family members are, and what society at that time thinks of them. Isolation reigns, and only in the last few stories do readers see characters finding community. While the book will certainly pique the interests of teen-lit historians, it feels lost and outdated, and teen readership and appeal may be harder to find. Garden's stories resurrect the darker side of LGBTQ life. Homophobia, censorship, and violence sadly still make national headlines, to be sure, but polls show that today's teenagers are the most tolerant generation yet. They crave stories about themselves and their future.

Kirkus Reviews
Garden, the author of the GLBT teen classic Annie On My Mind (1982), offers this chronological collection of essays and stories. There are two stories taking place in each decade from the 1950s to the 2000s. Each duo of stories is accompanied by an essay highlighting setbacks and strides forward within the GLBT community and in its quest for equal rights. The essays include specific names, cases and dates; unfortunately, however, there is no index. Some of the stories center on big political issues of the decade; in the '70s, Catholic teen Teresa feels she's crazy until she hears on the news that the APA has taken homosexuality off its list of mental disorders. Others focus on more personal issues; in the '80s, Josh and Frank lose an adult friend to AIDS. The stories are, in most instances, more vignettes than full-fledged narratives. The characters often lack background, and some of the scenarios are one note. Nonetheless, GLBT teens will find themselves in this important collection and likely come to appreciate the roots of their Pride all the more. (Fiction. YA)

Remarkible for some, lowsy for others.

To me this was a remarkible book. It really gave me a good insight of what G/L/B/T (Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender) people had to face in each decade from the 1950's to present day. It really made me feel bad about how they were treated for being just a little different, and how Americans can be very cruel for being just a little different. But things have improved, as it shows troughout this book. They are a little more accepted in our community now, but many are still outcatsed and killed in hate crimes for no reason. I believe this is a book many allies(people who support G/L/B/T) would love. But if you arent a person who likes these amazing people then i would say, dont even touch it because you will not like it.
