Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Most children learn best by participating or creating experiments that allow them to see, hear, and touch whatever it is they are learning. In this case, Gibson comes up with a dozen experiments that allow children to create instruments or devices that create or capture sound. Most are simple enough that they do not require adult assistance, although adult supervision would be wise on many of the experiments despite the lack of warning. Interspersed throughout the experiments are brief introductions to what the experiment will teach about sound and how the device or instrument makes the experiment work. Each experiment also includes additional options describing how to change the experiment slightly to further illustrate how and why the device makes sound. Full-color illustrations add depth to the instructions, and each experiment includes an image of a child performing the task. Each experiment seems to be designed for use by one or two children, but taken together or with slight modification, they can easily be adapted to a classroom setting. The text is straightforward and fascinating and is part of the "Fun Science Projects" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
