Otology and Neurotology

The first part of this book focuses on acoustics; anatomy of the external, middle, and inner ear and central auditory pathway; cochlear mechanics; and the physiology of the peripheral and central auditory system. Building on this foundation, the second part presents fundamental psychoacoustics methods for assessing hearing followed by highlights of essential aspects of hearing performance, including aspects of speech perception. The material in this book is sufficiently broad to cover a two-semester introductory course in hearing science. It will introduce upper level undergraduates and masters level students to the essential elements of acoustics, auditory physiology, and psychoacoustics. Students in audiology, psychology, neuroscience, and otology will find the material interesting and pertinent to their disciplines. The book will also serve as a useful reference source for scientists and educators in related fields. Numerous excellent schematics and line drawings help to explain many abstract concepts in acoustics, cochlear mechanics, neurophysiology, and psychoacoustics. The third edition brings this introductory volume up to date in a number of areas where significant advances have been made, specifically: hair cell motility; cochlear mechanics; otoacoustic emission; and cochlear physiology. As with many introductory texts, there are shortcomings, most notably the limited discussion of the anatomy and physiology of the central auditory pathway. Many photomicrographs are also of low quality. Nevertheless, the overall pedagogical value of this introductory text is quite high. It should provide the beginning student with an intelligible and comprehensive survey of thefield.
