Editorial Reviews

Mary Ellen Quinn
Alice Hammond is single, 33 years old, toiling away at an unrewarding job as an editorial assistant at a publishing house in New York. At about the same time that Nick, an actor with whom she has lived for several years, announces that he's in love with someone else and asks her to vacate their apartment, Alice finds herself pregnant. She goes to an abortion clinic, but at the last minute changes her mind, a decision that perplexes her relatives and friends. With no place else to go, given the lack of affordable apartments in Manhattan, Alice moves in with her grandmother, a feisty and cantankerous 89-year-old who was once a Hollywood starlet. They've never got along, but they come to rely on each other over the months of Alice's pregnancy. The birth of Alice's daughter, Elizabeth, brings Nick back into Alice's life, and Alice has to sort out her feelings for him and a coworker named Dan. Lewis tells her relatively simple story in unadorned prose. This is a book driven less by plot than by its characters, whom the author treats with humor, affection, and respect. Gran, in particular, is a wonderful creation, and the heart of the book is the relationship that evolves between Alice and her.
