This cardiology reference is designed primarily to be used for practical clinical approaches to common cardiac problems. Rather than an exhaustive textbook, this is a medium-sized book intended for use as an easy reference at the bedside in the care of patients in ER and ICU settings. The primary purpose is to provide a concise, user-friendly text with in-depth coverage of common cardiologic problems, highlighting hallmarks for diagnosis and treatment strategies, as well as a practical guide to cardiovascular pharmacology. The audience includes internists, family practitioners, emergency room physicians, and housestaff involved in the care of patients with acute cardiac problems, but who are not well versed in the field of cardiology. The chapters are formatted to approach the diagnosis of each topic, with bullets highlighting particular pearls for rapid retrieval of information, followed by the therapeutic options, with emphasis on cardiovascular pharmacology. Throughout the text are algorithms for quick reference to the evaluation and management of common cardiac problems. Although the editor cites a very legitimate indication for the text (i.e., a concise, medium-sized, easy-to-read reference on general clinical cardiology), the diagrams are often difficult to follow for rapid reference because of the lack of use of color. The clinical pearls are often buried in the text, and the cardiovascular pharmacology is too concise and incomplete to achieve the purpose of improving physician expertise of relevant cardiovascular pharmacology.
