    What a fun read!

Although I grew up in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon during the mid-40s, I could definitely relate to Heart Land! Our mother held a pretty tight rein, but my sister and I were able to get into trouble occasionally. Having recently experienced the death of two close relatives and reliving experiences at memorial services, Ms. Miller's use of photographs to bring past experiences to life was fun, picturesque, and so true! Reading late at night in a quiet house, I laughed out loud many times at the hijinks! I highly recommend!

    I loved Heartland.

Looking through photos after a loved one dies is always a form of healing. Miss Miller has wrote about this in a touching, yet humorous way. Her description of the characters and their lifes transforms you to the 1960's, You become part of their lifes; just peaking through the window watching as they rediscover and remember their own lifes, as they flip through the photos.

    Lots of humor and heart

Heart Land mixes a painter's eye for detail with heartfelt storytelling. Events have the feel of Tom Sawyer set in the 1930s. This is a good selection if you are looking for well-developed characters plus a healthy dash of humor.

    Memorable Memories

I quickly became enchanted and engrossed with vivid and life-changing events while growing up in a small USA community. The writing is delightful; words flowed together as descriptive stories emerged. I found myself spontaneously laughing out loud or shedding a tear. My own childhood came to life again as I contemplated the power of lessons learned during those powerful "growing up years".

I enjoyed a relaxing afternoon reading the book. It kept my interest and reminded me of the town where my Mother lived. It seems boys will be boys. I liked it for its originality.

It was a great book to read in the afternoon on a rainy day.

    Nostalgic Journey

What a wonderful journey back in time to a small Midwest town when life was much simpler. Reminded me of the boyhood pranks my father use to share about, which were such a delight to the younger generation. A must read for a nostalgic journey of fun reading!

When looking back is looking forward

Heart Land is sweet, deft and subtle. The oldest of two brothers packs family photograph albums after his mother's passing in 1979, and the images evoke memories from 1939-40.

Sometimes funny, occasionally poignant, Heart Land is a first-rate, observant look at prewar life in a small Ohio town. It is a time and place that are mythic now. Honesty, courage, and caring, friends, relatives, family and community are linked in generational and geographic semi-isolation, and every one knows and (mostly) cares about everybody else. Adults try to understand, children struggle to live up to adult values, and small incidents loom large as major life lessons are drawn from them.

Integrity and compassion underlie Heart Land's sensibility. Its people are real living, breathing human beings. Miller's work is engaging; an often lyric expression of small-town Midwestern America left not so long behind, with solid, reliable echoes that still lead to a simple, but well justified life.

    more from this reviewer

    "I loved it."

Here's a book that not only brings back memories but keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next misguided youthful adventure.
