Overview

Heart of a Hero begins the story of an improbable hero. Forced to become a fugitive by circumstance, Daran’s questionable morals and dubious choices lead him deeper and deeper into trouble. Those choices culminate in him being hanged for murder, but to his surprise, his story doesn’t end there. Fleeing the harsh authority of the Baron, trying to make sense of what’s happening to him, Daran joins a small group of priests who have been sent to investigate odd happenings on the wild northern frontier. Daran must help two young priests, the missionary soldier Arla and the empathic Jaros, with their own quest as he fights both to stay alive and find out just what is happening to him.

I am an education consultant who works for state government in the area of curriculum. Prior to my current job, I taught American and world history at a number of colleges and universities in California, Georgia, and South Carolina. I started writing fiction in graduate school. In addition to my novels and short works, I have written a lot of serialized fantasy fiction that has been posted on the Story Hour forum at the Dungeons & Dragons fan site EnWorld.org, including stories placed in the Forgotten Realms, Shackled City, and Rappan Athuk settings. These stories have collectively received over two thousand reader posts and three hundred thousand page views. I am also an active member of the player community for the multiplayer computer game Neverwinter Nights, and have released over two dozen modules for that game on the Neverwinter Vault Web site. My doctorate is in European history, and I live with my wife, who is an attorney, in Sacramento, California.

Suprisingly good. The weird and complex story of an orphan who it seems, cannot die. He unexpectedly keeps running into trouble and eventually meats up with some clergy with special skills, as they hunt a monsterous evil. 455 pages and very well written.

A little better than average. Very good writng but something is missing. I just couldn't get emotionally invested in any of the charactes. They are devoid of reasons to care about them or to dislke them which just makes the story flat.
