Overview

Sometimes love is the most dangerous magic of all...

Eager to find her place in the world and understand the frightening gifts she's been born with, Jessalyne Brandborn leaves her sheltered life to become apprentice to the most powerful sorceress in Shaldar. She hires Ertemis, the deadliest man in the realm, to get there.

With the Legion's bounty on his head, Ertemis is reluctant to escort Jessalyne but needs the money she offers - especially if he's ever to find out who his father is. On the way, he discovers benefits to Jessalyne's naiveté; she treats him like an equal, not an outlaw.

Swayed by Ertemis' gruff charm, Jessalyne starts to trust him and her emotional walls begin to crumble. Little do they know that within them lies the hope of the dying elven race, the renewal of Shaldar's beleaguered kingdom and an incredible chance at love. If they don't kill each other first.

This self-published title is as fine as any classic fantasy tale I've read in a long while. I would recommend this title to anyone who likes romance, fantasy (not of the darkest horror variety), unique "species" for want of a better word, and flawless, flowing writing.

I have been recommending this author quite a bit. One of the things that I love about the LendMe feature is that I can promote authors I really like, and I really really like this one. She fleshes out characters without being long winded, the details she gives are the right kinds. She made me love her main characters, and even a couple of the extras. I really enjoyed this story, and found it to be very well written. After borrowing it from someone else I had to purchase it for myself, along with the other 3 the author had available. I think most people would enjoy this story. The love interest is kept interesting without resorting to erotica. The fantasy world the author created was outstanding.

Wow! I'm at a loss for words. This book is so different than Kristen's other work. She never ceases to amaze me. I mean I have tons of favorite authors, but Kristen has a unique gift. She can write a story in any genre and be a superstar of it. I have yet to read anything of hers that I haven't loved. These characters in this book were so full of life. Very well developed with an amazing world. The hero was so dark and so hunky in a very dangerous sort of way. A bad boy with a big heart on the inside. The hero and heroine balanced each other so well. She was the light to his dark. There were moments I wanted to cry, times I was so angry, and so many time I was laughing so much due to something funny the heroine said. She was a delight. I can only imagine how scared she was of hurting someone with her ability. Yet she also had the gift of healing. I don't want to say too much to give anything away. I loved how it ended. Gosh, I wish I could do it justice but I can't find the words. This was such a unique book. I wish everybody would read it or listen to it. It would make a great movie. I wish she would write a sequel. Read it, you won't be disappointed. It will capture your heart and transport you back in time to another realm. I don't know how to spell the name of the place the elves lived but it was described the way heaven would be. It can only be accessed by opening your heart. And it's such a breathtaking place. The narrator brought this book to life. He is my favorite narrator. Such a great gift of doing voices. I could listen to him all day long.

As soon as I picked it up, I could not stop reading until I finished it. I was caught from page one. The plot is fascinating, the characters are lovable, and the romance between the main characters has just the right heat and "fun" without being erotic (vulgar?). I only wish there was more of it, or a sequel of some sorts.

The story was well told with interesting motives for the different characters. It blended fairly well. Lost stars due to too much filler. I skipped parts and was still able to enjoy the story. She could have cut out at least 100 pages and had a better book.
