Overview

The third volume in this brilliant series by Ace continues to focus on the Excello, Mankind, and A-Bet labels. There are 22 sides included here by the great Doris Duke, Freddie North, Bobby Powell, 5 Degrees Fahrenheit, and others recorded between 1971 and 1973, with one, North's regional radio and jukebox smash "Sun Comes Up," coming from way back in 1968. Duke and North have the lion's share of cuts here with five apiece. The former's gritty sides include "It Sure Was Fun," "If She's Your Wife (Who Am I)," and "Bad Water." It's a given that "Since I Fell for You" is here, as is "He's Everything I Need." Ace issued a solid Duke volume in 2006, and these tunes as well as a slew of others were included. There are some true nearly unheard-of gems here, such as Art Gentry's beautiful ballad "This Is My Chance" and Jimmy Jules' burning "My World Tumbles Down." The bottom line here is simple: every volume in this series thus far is smoking, and has no filler whatsoever. Get them all.
