Heart of the World

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
HEART OF THE WORLD is Mary Youngblood's tribute to three U'wa activists who were murdered in February 1999. A haunting, melancholy tone permeates much of the album like an aching heart, and even the cheerier "Loon Dance" is touched with longing. "Yuba," named for an ancestral village on the Feather River, pumps with the cadence of a lonely heartbeat, while "Cold Wind" and "Fog" resonate with echoing drones hibernating against frozen air. "Yuba," named for an ancestral village on the Feather River, pumps with the cadence of a lonely heartbeat, while "Cold Wind" and "Fog" resonate with echoing drones hibernating against frozen air. Youngblood plays a variety of Native American wooden flutes; some have two or three chambers, allowing her to play multiple notes simultaneously. Vocalist Joanne Shenandoah adds her silky harmonies on several tunes, and Tom Wasinger fleshes out the instrumentation on guitar, dulcimer, bass, and percussion. Highlights include the upbeat title track, where Youngblood's flutes play against the jaunty cadence of the drums, and "Nana's Lullaby," which closes the album on a sweet and tender tone. HEART OF THE WORLD is a very moving album that comes from a space of love and respect. Highly recommended.
All Music Guide - Steve Huey
Mary Youngblood's second album, Heart of the World, is another traditional tour de force; her playing is both meditative and expressive.
