Overview

From Lurlene McDaniel, the bestselling author of young adult inspirational fiction, comes Heart to Heart. This emotionally charged novel explores loss, love, renewal, and the ways in which these complex bonds within families and between friends are tested at life's most challenging moments.

Elowyn Eden and Kassey Messechek are best friends. They share every aspect of their lives. But one thing Elowyn has not yet shared with Kassey is that she checked the organ donor box on her newly acquired driver's license. Kassey only learns of this in a startling and devastating way—when Elowyn's life-giving donor wishes are about to be honored.

Arabeth St. Clair has not had the luck to have a best friend. Due to her diseased heart, she's led a sheltered life. When Arabeth is sixteen, she and her mother receive the call that will change their lives—but they don't know to whom they should be forever grateful.

When the worlds of these three girls and their families intersect, lives are changed in ways never imagined. Most especially, it is Kassey who sees things differently, for she can keep alive the memory of her dear friend by sharing the renewed life of another teenage girl, while helping to ease the pain of the two families involved and coming to terms with her own.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Elowyn and Kassey have been best friends since the summer before seventh grade when they met in the hospital, waiting for surgery due to sports-inflicted injuries. From that day on, they did everything together. They were inseparable, until they got to high school, and Elowyn started dating. During their junior year, Elowyn got her driver's license and a fancy new red car. Sadly, one night after a fight with her boyfriend Wyatt, Elowyn wrecked her car and died. Both girls' families are devastated, and surprised to discover Elowyn had indicated on her driver's license that she wanted to be an organ donor. Comforted by the idea that a part of Elowyn would live on, her parents agree. But they did not realize how much she would live on until they meet Arabeth, who received Elowyn's heart. This young girl, who was near death before the transplant, somehow has received more than the gift of life: she has inherited Elowyn's preference for Chunkey Monkey ice cream and Country French decor, in addition to some of her mannerisms and personality traits. As the lives of all of these characters become increasingly intertwined, it is hard to tell where Elowyn ends and Arabeth begins. Prolific author McDaniel, whose niche is stories about teens touched by illness, death, and tragedy, has penned a detailed drama that will resonate particularly with tweens and early teens. Part mystery and part romance, unraveling the reason for Arabeth's different persona will keep readers hooked until the bittersweet conclusion. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis
School Library Journal
Gr 6–10—After her best friend, Elowyn, is in a fatal car accident, Kassey finds out that Elowyn registered to be a donor while receiving her new driver's license. Her death brings new life to Arabeth, who has been on the heart-transplant list for years. As Kassey attempts to come to terms with her grief, Arabeth begins to realize that Elowyn may not be completely gone. She finds herself suddenly sharing the same intense passions as the deceased, right down to the same boyfriend and best friend. As she tries to reclaim her life, Kassey and Elowyn's family cling to the hope that she still exists in the heart of this new girl. The concept of cellular memory, where organ recipients retain knowledge, skills, or feelings of the organ's original owner, is fascinating. Unfortunately, McDaniel doesn't fully delve into the details of the concept. Instead, the book focuses on the drama and angst created by the situation, which is still enough to keep some readers interested. Kassey and Arabeth are realistic teens, and even secondary characters are rounded out and interesting. The story, although a bit melodramatic, moves quickly and makes for a satisfying read. Give this to fans of McDaniel's work or anyone who enjoys a good cry.—Jessie Spalding, Tempe Public Library, AZ
Kirkus Reviews
Those familiar with McDaniel's tearjerker style won't be surprised or disappointed by this latest iteration, in which teenager Elowyn Eden's untimely death enables another teen, Arabeth St. Clair, to live through the gift of heart transplantation. Readers are briefly directly introduced to the charismatic teen, but fiery-tempered Elowyn lives on after her deadly car accident through the stories and memories of her best friend, Kassey, and, eerily, through Arabeth, who immediately after transplantation finds herself changed. Changes range from craving Elowyn's favorite ice-cream flavor to the transformation of her timid personality into an outgoing style she has never known. At first, Arabeth is confused, but as she befriends Elowyn's family, boyfriend and, especially, Kassey, she realizes that her transplant included more than just a heart. The author plays this as a positive sharing rather than a more sinister takeover, and woven into this emotional text are threads related to parent/child relationships, first loves and death and dying, which add depth and a sadness that is expertly tempered with hope and a love of life. The best book i have ever read:)

This book shows the difference of person and heart. Most people would say that the heart could not effect the human body but some would hage second thoughts. This book all so shows how one oragan can make a diference. Heart to heart is about these two girls that make a speical freind ship after meeting each other in the hostpital until one gets into a car crash. To the other ones suprise her freind has marked oragan doner on her lisense which makes the doctors say that they will cut off the macines that is keeping her alive. After that her heart gets donated to a girl that has been waiting for a new heart for years. As the book goes on the girl that got the new heart expeinceses stuff that the person that first had the heart would do or say. I hope you like the book it was the best book i have ever read.

Reviewed by Sally Kruger aka "Readingjunky" for TeensReadToo

Lurlene McDaniel's newest novel explores the idea of cellular memory as experienced by some transplant patients. Kassey and Elowyn are best friends. They have grown up together playing on the same teams, having sleepovers, and even vacationing together. They can finish each others' thoughts and sentences. They are almost inseparable - until the night Elowyn runs off the road and hits a tree. A traumatic brain injury puts Elowyn in a coma and leaves her parents with the difficult decision of honoring her request to be an organ donor. Her family and friends are devastated, but their tragedy is the answer to Arabeth's prayers. Arabeth has suffered with a crippling heart condition for years. She and her mother have supported each other through the death of Arabeth's father in Afghanistan, and now Arabeth is struggling to hang on as she waits for a heart transplant. Elowyn's accident provides that heart, and Arabeth and her mother will be eternally grateful. Almost immediately after the transplant, Arabeth begins having unexplainable experiences. She suspects it might be associated with receiving the heart of another young teen, but she is hesitant to share her thoughts until she meets two of Elowyn's good friends, Kassey and Wyatt. The feelings and sensations are rather unsettling, and cause emotional stress that could threaten Arabeth's peace of mind about surviving with the heart of another. Lurlene McDaniel fans will be thrilled with HEART TO HEART. It examines life, love, and loss from several perspectives. It's a sure success for those looking for an emotionally stirring read.

    Don't pass this book up.

Heart to Heart hits you deep and makes you want to help others in need. This book is sad and happy at the same time. Out of the badrillion books i've read, this is one of two that have made me cry. After reading this i went straight to look for more books by this author. I definitely reccommend Heart to Heart. You won't regret it.
