When 19-year-old Don and 17-year-old Phil cut their first single as the Everly Brothers for Columbia in 1956 ("Keep A' Lovin' Me," a flop, included here), they stepped into rock 'n' roll's unfolding drama as the most direct link to the Appalachian mountain music that was their birthright. Although Don was already a successful songwriter -- "Thou Shalt Not Steal" had been a hit for Kitty Wells -- it took a label move from Columbia to Cadence and the penetrating, literate songs of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant to propel the brother act into rock 'n' roll's pantheon as the foremost chroniclers of what Don has termed "teen misery." What transpired between 1957, when the Everlys went to No. 2 with the Bryants' "Bye Bye Love," and their final appearance in the pop Top Ten five years later, with "That's Old Fashioned," soon proved to be historically resonant. Countless early British Invasion groups built their vocal harmonies on the rock of the Everly Brothers, and today their sound echoes in the work of several alternative country bands. This four-disc set chronicles the Everlys' dynasty, letting their Cadence and Warner Brothers monuments tell the gripping story of their artistic evolution to a self-sufficient duo with well-crafted original songs. Disc 4 also includes selections from the Everlys' successful mid-'80s comeback, including their wonderful 1984 hit single, "On the Wings of a Nightingale," written and produced by Paul McCartney.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
The four-CD, 102-song Heartaches & Harmonies set includes all of the Everly Brothers' key performances, as well as many overlooked ones, dating from a previously unreleased 1951 radio performance of "Don't Let Our Love Die" to a 1990 live rendition of the very same tune. Opening with a disc's worth of classic Cadence performances, most of the next three CDs are given over to their largely overlooked Warner Bros. '60s output, including many interesting flop singles and album tracks, as well as top-notch rarities like an alternate version of the supremely moody "Nancy's Minuet" and the mid-'60s outtake "And I'll Go." Fine liner notes with detailed comments from the Everlys themselves, but it still manages to miss some great tunes (like the 1964 single "You're the One I Love" and various tracks from their late-'50s and early-'60s LPs) and shouldn't be considered a definitive collection of all their great performances. And the hard fact is, a lot of their post-1966 material (which comprises some of disc three and all of disc four) is kind of boring.
