Overview

The anti-Japanese racism in California during World War II first sparked recognition of the iniquities of race in America in the 20- year-old Yuri Nakahara (later Yuri Kochiyama). She was to go on to a lifetime of radical anti-racism activism which brought her into contact with Malcolm X, the Revolutionary Action Movement, Puerto Rican independence activists, and many others over the years. In this biography of the activist, Fujino (Asian American studies, U. of California at Santa Barbara) describes her political development and considers what her life shows about the relationship between social movements and individual activists. The work is in large part based on extensive interviews with Kochiyama. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
