Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
What a find! Recorded three years before her official debut, Heartdrops finds singer and pianist Diana Krall interpreting the music of her then-boss, Swiss trombonist Vince Benedetti, who “discovered” Krall when she was working solo in Europe during the late '80s. While the material is uniformly appealing, the main attraction is, of course, Krall, who sounds and plays like, well, Diana Krall. She had that certain something even back then, and Benedetti was astute enough to hear it. These performances -- none of which are less than five minutes long, although two songs are also presented in shorter, radio-friendly edits -- also give us a chance to hear Krall stretch out...

These performances -- none of which are less than five minutes long, although two songs are also presented in shorter, radio-friendly edits -- also give us a chance to hear Krall stretch out as an improvising pianist. Yet it’s her intimate way with a ballad that has granted Krall fame and fortune; “My Love,” a gentle, romantic tune that would work well on a current Krall album, gives her a chance to display her special gifts. In the ensuing years, Krall was to markedly mature as an artist, but Heartdrops gives notice that a rare talent was already blooming overseas.
All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
This unusual CD is subtitled "Vince Benedetti Meets Diana Krall." Benedetti, a Swiss trombonist, ran into Krall quite by accident in 1988, enjoyed hearing her perform, and persuaded her to play some concerts with his quartet. This 1990 recording is the result, and it predates Krall's other records by several years. Of course, if Krall were not involved in this project, chances are it would never have been released. The seven songs two of which are performed twice include five somewhat forgettable Benedetti originals plus his words to Harold Vick's "Your Destiny" and Isla Eckinger's "Detroit Blues." Krall plays piano, sings on most of the material, and sometimes has harmonized vocal duets with guitarist Martien Oster. While the overall music is decent, nothing memorable takes place, so this is a historical curiosity that is the earliest recording released thus far of the soon-to-be-famous Diana Krall.

    Take it easy...

In these horrific days of the cacophony of war, this CD offers a wonderful catharsis. It's smooth, pleasant and never overpowering. Pick a track...any track...and you'll enjoy mellow melody and wonderfully balanced orchestrations. Diana is a diva and Benedetti is always "liquid" on the 'bone.
