Overview

Suspended for teaching human sexuality to her students, Truvy Valentine has come to Harmony, Montana, to visit her dear friend, Edwina, and try to firget that she will most likely die a tall, athletic old maid. Although she has diligently studied how to choose the perfect mate, no book could prepare her for her attraction to Jake Brewster, a man whose favorite things in life seem to be beer, boxing, and poker.

The proud owner of Bruiser's Gymnasium, Jake has little patience for the proper Miss Valentine—until he gets a taste of what simmers beneath her prim exterior. Trouble is, Jake's not the marrying kind—not hardly. Soon Truvy is teaching dance classes at Edwina's school and Jake is making her head spin. But the magic they find in each other's arms could turn to heartache unless they can learn to let go of the past and step into the future—together.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Stewart's sluggish new romantic thriller (following Brown-Eyed Girl) hops on the coattails of writers like J.D. Robb and Tami Hoag in an attempt to create chilling villains and spine-tingling suspense. This rather clich d tale, however, falls well short of its aim. Genna Snow is an FBI agent specializing in child abuse and pornography who is plagued by a dark past. As a child, she was attacked by a trusted camp counselor intent on "consecrating" her body and then reviled by her family for reporting "Brother Michael" and bringing chaos to their smalltown Pennsylvania congregation. Now, over 20 years later, Genna is paired with her on-again/off-again boyfriend, serial killer specialist John Mancini, to track down a murderer who preys on young women. As the investigation drags on, Genna slowly learns what readers have already figured out from the beginning--that the killer is connected to her own childhood terrors and she is next on the victim list. In two equally predictable turns of events, Genna is reunited with her estranged sister, and the issues that have kept her relationship with John from becoming serious are resolved. Although Stewart has her modest following of devotees, they will likely be disappointed by this lackluster read. (Feb.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    Excellent!

Why all of Ms. Holm's historicals were not made available for nook is beyond me. I have most of her early work in paperback and they are all on my keeper shelves. The characters in this book were lovable, endearing and believable and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I have purchased it as well for my nook, and I would like to see all of her works made available for the 21st century on nook.

    disappointing

I basically skimmed through it and got the storyline. It doesn't differ again from the other books in this series. Truvy seems too emotional, too helpless (and struck me whether she's mentally stable because she can go into hysterics over a dead bird) and Jack is not rough enough for a guy who owns a gymnasium. I mean they are nice characters but they lack believability. The storyline is simple and there's no twist or intrigue to be interesting. I'm glad the series has ended and thus saving me from further disappointment and money. I thought the first 'Harmony' is the best of the series, while 'Honey' also has a complicated storyline. But with 'Hearts' there is a lot of potential for a good story but more thought could definitely pull it up.

    more from this reviewer

    Excellent Americana historical romance

Early in the Teddy Roosevelt administration, Truvy Valentine teaches economics and coaches athletics at the all girls St. Francis Academy. Although a renegade in many ways, her energy makes Truvy a popular teacher among the administration, staff, and students. However, she totally crosses the line when she reads extracts from a nonregulated book, ¿The Science of Life¿, that provides insight on human sexuality to her students. Truvy is given a leave of absence to decide whether she can return under the condition that she teach inside the school¿s rules.
Truvy travels to Harmony, Montana, home of her friend Edwinna Wolcott. There she meets Jake ¿Bruiser¿ Brewster, who runs a local gym and was once considered the world¿s strongest man. Truvy replaces the pregnant Edwinna teaching dance, with most of her students coming from Jake¿s gym. However, not only can¿t she dance in spite of being a talented athlete, she only wants to dance with Jake, not the men competing in a local physique contest.
HEARTS is a superb historical romance that provides the audience with a feel for western America circa 1901. The story line is enjoyable as the tidbits of history are cleverly woven into the plot. Truvy and Jake are a dynamic duo and the support cast adds to the authenticity of the fabulous fourth and final book of Stef Ann Holm¿s wonderful ¿Brides for all Seasons¿ series.
Harriet Klausner
