I had heard about 12-year-old Mattie Stepanek's poetry from a friend, so when I saw the Heartsongs Treasury (a compilation of three of his five books), I picked it up immediately, and I'm glad I did. Mattie, born with a rare and terminal form of muscular dystrophy, writes poems and short stories with a wisdom and maturity that is seldom found, yet his style of writing has the simplicity and naivete of a child. Most of his poems/short stories are happy and creative, though he does write often about Jamie, Stevie, and Katie, his brothers and sister whom were also lost to terminal muscular dystrophy. The Heartsongs Treasury changed my life and made me see things in a different way; I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, especially children because it is easy to comprehend and Mattie illustrates every page. Was this review helpful?
