Okay, I just had to write a review of this book because it is not your normal romance. When I first read the blurb, I was intrigued and took a chance and bought it. I am so pleased now. The story was interesting and kept me turning the "pages." There was enough suspense that it kept me guessing about what would happen next. And wow! Some of the plot was very surprising. I got very annoyed with Mak several times, but I had to admire her sense of right and wrong. That's why I was so surprised at the ending. Anyone buying this book is in for a treat. I could not be more pleased and will try another book from Ms. Roberts!
I Couldn’t Put It Down Twenty-four year old Madison Kinlock’s dream was to become a cop. At a young age she knew hard work and dedication would get her there. Now with three years under her belt as a police officer, a bad accident on a ski slope results in an injury that ends her career. With reluctance, she turns her skills solving cases as a private investigator; from cheating husbands to corporate embezzlers, it’s a way to pay the bills. Mak’s investigation goes awry in a parking garage when thugs arrive claiming her perp for another wrongdoing, and from there things go haywire. She never expected to wake up in a bedroom staring into gorgeous blue eyes of Chase Moon, notorious mob boss. Chase Xavier Moon, handsome and tall, a dark version of an Italian mob boss has a stronghold on his territory in Phoenix, Arizona. His pledge to overtake Manuel Estaphon, kingpin of New Mexico, and the biggest killer in America with ties to Mexican drug cartels, bring Mak unwittingly into her own complicated drug case that include a bad cop in the mix. And she has a suspicion of who it might be in her old precinct. But Moon is more than he seems, he values loyalty in his organization and is seen more like “Robin Hood”. With an evil element on both sides of the law, he can at least ensure that kids and women don’t get hurt on his turf. I admired Mak as a kickass, alpha female, and Moon is definitely a strong equal. Although there’s some resistance in the beginning, that attraction finally combusts when the deed is done, and there’s plenty of steam pouring off the pages. I generally don’t find mobsters as hero material, but I did in Moon’s instance. What happened to his parents, the tragic event very much defined the man he’d become. Though entrenched in illegal business, I saw that he was at least honorable and protective over Mak. I really liked the secondary characters who brought interest and depth to the story. Gomez and Gabriella help us understand more about Moon and his past. This is the first book I’ve read from the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. From the start I couldn’t put it down, Ms Robert’s writing style grabbed me, she doesn’t mince words and the pacing is flawless in establishing the feel to this story. Heat is a perfect blend of story, sexy, suspense, and twists. I loved every minute of it, and especially the epilogue which brought it home and was completely sigh-worthy. Great job, Ms. Roberts.
