Amazing story and highly recommended for church libraries.
Library Journal

Brother Yun (Living Water) is an exiled Chinese evangelical Christian preacher and proponent of the Back to Jerusalem missionary movement. In this international best seller, he relates his experiences as an underground preacher in Communist China. Cristofer Jean, as the voice of Yun, and Jeany Park, as the voice of Yun's wife, Deling, offer sincere, well-modulated performances. A very intense title that may seem inspirational to some and fanatical to others. For strong Christian nonfiction collections.

Except for the second book like this, "Living Water", this is easily the best and most life-changing book I have ever read (not counting the Bible). It caused me to go before the Lord and have Him really, REALLY search my heart. The Lord caused me to find this book, BRAND NEW, on the shelf at a Salvation Army. Not looking like something I would read, I bought it for my husband - just because there was a book sale. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. I have loaned it out I don't know how many times. I am planning to buy it on audio in the near future. It caused me to have a revelation of what it means to be REAL. Now God is making me real. I used to wonder why there was such a big difference in the way the followers of Jesus lived in the New Testament as compared to the way we are today. After reading this book, I understand. There are Christians, and then there are REAL followers of Christ. Now I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling. Now I will allow Christ to glorify Himself through my life, whatever the cost. All I can say is, if you are a Christian and you don't know what I'm talking about here, then you need to read to this book. But only if you desire to be a REAL seeker of Truth. Because this book, if prayed about before, during, and after reading, WILL change the way you look at yourself and the world around you. This book WILL stir you to get on your knees before God and allow the Holy Spirit to search and purge you of everything that hinders your relationship with God. This book will cause you to see that if you are not leading the lost to Jesus, you are falling short. And nobody has to fall short. Jesus has given us power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). He said that we have freely received, and that freely we should give (Matthew 10:8). So we know that we have been both commissioned and equipped with the authority and power to love others and lead them to Jesus. If you have not yet had a true revelation of this fact, READ THIS BOOK. You will know the things written in it are true because your spirit bears witness. It's not like you read this book and go, "Ok, that sounds right". You read this book and you go, "Oh. Oh!" If you have the Spirit of the living God in you, you are going to too FEEL the words as you read them. I could go on and on about this book. But just get it and read it and see for yourself. And get Living Water, too! It's the second part to this book. You won't regret it!

This was the best book I have ever read. I am glad I got to read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to read a violent, harsh, faith-building book.

Paints a vivid picture of what the persecuted church in China is really like. Makes me realize how fortunate I am to live in a country where religious freedom exists. I now understand what it means to live for Christ.

The Heavenly Man The Heavenly Man is an amazing true story of Brother Yun, a Chinese missionary. In his life Yun has faced brutal interrogations and tortures all for the sake of Jesus Christ. His passion in the Chinese house churches and Chinese prisons has changed all of China. Yun set a lifestyle of fasting and prayer. While in prison he went 74 days without food and water, only through God's power did he survive. He would later bring all his fellow cell mates to Christ including a rapist who went to prison for killing his best friend. Through strict devotion to God Yun changed the lives of all he came into contact with. Hearing true testimonies of people who have truly devoted their lives to God bring me such encouragement. This book will make you remember that Christianity is not a religion but a relationship with the one and only true God. Yun never went to Sunday school or grew up in a Christian family. He came to this relationship through the power of Christ's name and through tedious devotion to reading the Bible. Yun gains respect through his humility and admission of his mistakes, he is not embarrassed to speak of how his pride got in the way or how his pacifism ruined the work of God. Yun speaks of the value of family and how at the center of Christianity is family, and how our earthly families can reflect how we have been accepted into God's family. He tells how the commitment and prayer of his family and friends helped him reach the wicked men on earth. If you are greatly seeking encouragement or if you are curious to hear about the power of God and the ways He can work in your life, this book is for you. -Lars Lindquist-

What an amazing book which should be read by all Christians! Brother Yun is a Chinese Christian and this is his story. He began following Jesus at the age of 16 – in 1974, when his father was supernaturally healed of cancer. Yun soon desired a Bible and prayed and fasted for one. God provided one for him, and Yun began to not only read it but to memorize it chapter by chapter. This is the beginning of the book. Yun chronicles his many beatings, tortures and years in prison, as well as God’s provisions for him and his family. Eventually God leads Brother Yun out of China, but not before he reached many, many people. This is just such an incredible book – to see God working in the lives of the Chinese and how they desire to reach the Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus. At one point Brother Yun says, “Don’t pray for the persecution to stop! We shouldn’t pray for a lighter load to carry, but stronger backs to endure. There is little that any of the Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu countries can to do us that we haven’t already experienced in China. The worst they can do is kill us, but all that means is that we will be promoted into the glorious presence of our Lord for all eternity!” What a difference in perspective from the western Christian. I found this was not an easy read but a challenging one and I highly recommend it (although it is PG13 for the torture scenes).

It's hard to put this book down. I was continually fascinated to learn what has actually happened in China that fueled the spread of the gospel that I have heard rumours of for years. In Heavenly Man, Brother Yun manages to convey the struggles, deprivation, imprisonment, torture, and trials in a way that gives a clear picture of what took place without the story being anything but positive. His dedication to the Lord and to the call on his life is evident in everything he has done. He clearly embodies the truth that God doesn't choose those who are able to do things on their own but instead those who must rely totally on Him to go forth. I highly recommend this book. It is not only eye-opening but is also revealing of God's work around the world. I was given this book in exchange for my honest review. I can't recommend it highly enough.

The Heavenly Man is not an easy read. It’s not the kind of book that you’ll dive into with a cup of coffee and plunge through in a day. However, it is the kind of book that will make you stop and thank God for the freedoms He’s allowed on those of us in the United States. It is the kind of story that reminds us how blessed, how privileged we are to be able to worship freely and without real persecution. Most importantly, it is the kind of story that causes us to lift prayers for our brothers and sisters around the world who suffer for the sake of preaching the gospel to the lost. Yun tells his very painful story of being arrested, tortured and years of unspeakable horrors for the sake of the sharing the gospel. His relentless pursuit to fulfill his calling is inspirational and touching. Deling, his wife, also gives her account of the events. I loved the way they write together because the reality is, his struggles were shared with his loved ones as they prayed for his release from prison. Far from Bonnie and Clyde, this couple is considered to be “criminals” in their country. Their only criminal behavior was their inability to surrender Jesus for the lies their country propagated. The Heavenly Man is an intense read but highly recommended. I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Truly life changing. You will see God through a completely fresh set of eyes. We in the western, democracised world have it so easy that we're completely missing what God can do. Most importantly, God wants all of our heart, soul, and mind and Brother Yun exemplifies the peace that comes when one gives it all away.

Absolutely amazing book! It's like reading stories from the New Testament. It just goes to show us that there's so much more God wants to do in and through us. We've settled in our busy lives and let too many "things" take our time and attention away from God and His will. I was very humbled by Brother Yun's powerful, heartfelt testimony. The prison escape story was absolutely amazing. I even went on Wikipedia to see what they said about it. They stated, "It is reported that the official investigation by the Chinese Government concluded that 'Yun received no human help in his escape.'" Love that! God is awesome! I only hope I could be as brave as Yun to keep my faith in the face of such intense persecution. Truly inspiring!

The Heavenly Man By Brother Yun ad Paul Hattaway Publ: Monarch Books c. 2002 This is the story of a man called by God to spread the Gospel to his native China after he was saved at the age of 16. Brother Yun’s struggles to follow the path the Lord has chosen for him are detailed. Both the struggles he faces on a personal spiritual level and the obstacles put in place by the Chinese government and unbelieving Chinese. On some fronts this book is hard to read because we members of the Western church are not used to truly suffering for our choice to follow God. Our lives are not in danger because of our beliefs. Our families are not hounded because we believe. Owning a Bible is not a cause to be put to death or imprisoned. Even if we were to be imprisoned we would not be faced disease, hunger, torture, and unsanitary conditions. We are allowed to see the incredible faith of the house church movement and its leaders. We glimpse the measures these courageous believers are willing to go to so they can get a copy of the Bible. The struggles of the house church movement to remain alive in spite of the persecution by the Chinese government and the struggles within the movement are played out before us openly. Read this book to get a look at what the Christians in China are really facing. Read this book to realize how truly blessed we are in the West by our religious freedoms. Read this book to learn about the blessing of the Chinese church and how to pray for them. But mostly read this book to see the move of the mighty hand of God. You will be changed by reading this book. I was provided this book through The Book Club Network for my honest review.

The Heavenly Man is a wonderful book that opened my eyes to the suffering of Christians in China, understanding true sacrifice for the gospel, and realizing that as part of the western church I have much to learn about sacrifice and following the Lord. It was a book I enjoyed reading, and sometimes had to put down to really think through what Brother Yun was saying. He preaches the Gospel by his words, actions, and the choices he makes in his life. This book has greatly changed my heart. Some quotes I liked: "You can never really know the scriptures until you are willing to be changed by them." "I had placed myself in the hands of the Lord of justice. I was no linger living by my own strength, but by the grace of God." "We're not called to live by human reason. All that matters is obedience to God's Word and his leading in our lives." "You need to realize that that any love I have in my heart for Jesus is only because of his love for me." This is a book you must read. I am having all my kids read this book, my husband, and anyone I can talk into reading it. It is powerful. Not just because of what Yun has done and suffered for the Gospel, but on how he is open to God changing his heart. I want to be open to that kind of change. I highly recommend this book. I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
