Ben and his friends, the Core Four Plus One, are so excited to play in their town's All-Star Baseball league. But in the first game of the season Ben gets hit by a pitch. It's never happened to him before and it shakes him up.

Another player on Ben's team, Justin, is acting really weirdly. Ben's known Justin for a while and they're friendly but he's not one of Ben's closest "boys." Justin is the team's best hitter but his behavior on and off the field is erratic.

Ben discovers that Justin's parents are getting a divorce and Justin is thinking about quitting the team. Like good teammates do, Justin helps Ben deal with his issues at bat while Ben is there for his friend while his family is struggling.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for GAME CHANGERS #2: PLAY MAKERS:

"Like the first in the series, this volume provides an action-packed look at middle school sports as it explores issues of friendship, problem solving and coming-of-age." -KIRKUS

Praise for GAME CHANGERS:

"Even the female characters display intelligence and insight, a rarity in male sports fiction. A first-rate, inspiring football story, this will leave fans with an understanding that not all teamwork occurs on the gridiron." -BOOKLIST ONLINE REVIEW

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Lupica’s “Game Changers” series continues as Ben and the rest of the “Core Four” start their summer looking forward to a championship trophy in yet another beloved sport: baseball. “As long as nothing happens, we’ll be fine,” Ben tells his friends. But, Lupica notifies the reader in one of his dark chapter-ending forecasts, “They weren’t.” Hit by an errant pitch in the first game of the season, Ben finds himself flinching every time he comes up to bat. And the team’s heavy hitter, Justin (not one of the Core Four), gets himself thrown out of an early game for hurling his bat down the first-base line in frustration after a tag-out. Is this going to be the kind of summer that leads the Core Four to wish they could “stay eleven forever?” Or is this going to be the summer that unexpectedly helps them to grow up? Lupica delivers thrilling game play in chapter after chapter as the Rockville Rams meet up with each new opponent. Ben has the chance to help Justin deal with wrenching family changes, by giving the other boy the chance to help Ben with his spooked batting. While the boys seem remarkably sophisticated as Little League athletes and Ben in particular is already a remarkably mature young man for a middle-schooler, nobody surpasses Lupica for communicating the sheer love of playing the game, or for getting readers to choke up, teary-eyed, over the deep, beautiful bonds of enduring friendship fostered through sports. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.; Ages 9 to 12.
