Overview

Basic Description

This is a parallel Hebrew-English Bible containing excellent formatting and navigation. For each verse, the Hebrew is presented, and then the English verse is presented beneath it.

The Hebrew Bible is displayed in its original Hebrew and Aramaic using an aesthetically pleasing Hebrew-Aramaic script. It contains all of the consonants, vowels (nequddot), and cantillation marks. It follows the text of the Leningrad Codex (Codex Leningradensis) as digitized by the J. Alan Groves Center for Advanced Biblical Research, version 4.14. This is the same codex used in printing Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia and Biblia Hebraica Quinta.

The English translation is the Jewish Publication Society's (JPS) 1917 translation. It was the first translation of the Hebrew Bible into English by a committee of Jews. It was originally published with the full title The Holy Scriptures According to the Masoretic Text: A New Translation with the Aid of Previous Versions and with Constant Consultation of Jewish Authorities. It is formatted well and is distinctive in retaining the original line breaks within a verse.

This digital title recognizes that Bibles are often not read linearly and provides a variety of navigational aids, including a two-level Table of Contents allowing quick access to any chapter of the Bible. More details are found in the book's preface.

Version

This title was updated on December 5, 2012 to address compatibility issues with recent versions of the reader software on some Nook models.

Very good study book for Hebrew Classes! I like the Hebrew being just above the English translation. Makes it easy to read & search!

I would not buy this book until the JPS evidences they have the bugs out. I bought for my nook color in September. There were several typos, but what made it more of a distraction than study resource was the inability to navigate via the Contents or my bookmarks. I called it into BN Customer support and it happened to them too. As instructed, I waited over two weeks - to allow the publisher time to address - and then loaded a fresh copy of the book. The same thing happened! I aske BN for a refund and I will sadly remove from my library. I hope to find a reliable e-TaNaCh sometime soon, but this was not it!

The Hebrew displays on top the english text. It also stacks up on itself. Un-usable.

we enjoyed the format, the type and the ease of reading, all up until we did a Nook update and lost access to the book. Apparently the book format is no longer compatible with the updated simple touch Nook. The store personnel tried to download to their sample device which didn't work either. Awaiting a fix for the incompatibility :( This version of the Tanakh is in the archaic English, but still easy to follow. Great for practicing our nascent Hebrew in a light weight portable version. Sure hope the fix comes along soon! Already miss reading this ebook.
