Overview

Like medieval illuminated manuscripts that honor the divine, the celebratory creations of Adam Rhine evoke a sense of sacred wonder and mystery in all who behold them.

Unique in both concept and design, this sumptuous book offers inspired art that speaks both to the heart and to the mind. Rhine presents twenty-two traditional Hebrew letters illuminated by watercolors to enhance his striking calligraphic rendering of this ancient language of communication between Hashem—The Higher Name—and the Jewish people.

Using Psalm 145 ("Praise the Lord, O My Soul") to provide context, each illumination is accompanied by the artist's meditative reflections that invite us to contemplate the deeper meanings ourselves.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This beautiful book comprises two parts. The first is a collection of illuminated versions of 22 traditional Hebrew letters, accompanied by the artist's own reflections on the spiritual meanings of the letter, grounded in the context of Psalm 145 ("Praise the Lord, O my soul…"). The second part is the artist's Magen Davidsseries, a group of paintings inspired by sacred words or symbols. More than mere illumination, something more like mandalas or meditative instruments, these striking images should appeal to Jewish and non-Jewish readers and admirers of art alike. Highly recommended.

Meet the Author

Adam Rhine began his artistic life as a doodler. Choosing to become an artist at age eleven, he soon mastered the covert art of doodling in school, a practice that he has perfected as an adult. All of his Judaica works began as tiny ballpoint sketches, usually on Post-its™, quickly capturing ideas and designs. He then pastes them into his sketchbook and forgets until inspiration leads him to expand and perfect one particular design into a vivid and ornate watercolor painting.

Rhine holds a Bachelors in Fine Art in Illustration from Northern Illinois University, has worked as a professional artist since 1991, and is a member of the American Guild of Judaic Art. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Lincolnwood Jewish Congregation in Lincolnwood, Illinois. His work has been featured on the Hallmark Channel, in the Rothschild Gallery in St. Louis, and as the artistic focus of best-selling calendars for three years running.
