Overview

It’s a quiet evening at Hedgehog’s house,
until there’s a squeak at the gate.
Someone’s outside who wants to come in.
It’s dark and the hour is late.

It’s someone who’s lost and wants to go home,
someone who can’t find the way.
“Come in,” invites Hedgehog, “come in and sit down.
Tomorrow will be a new day.”

Winsome watercolor art and rhyming text combine to tell the sweet story of a little piglet who is lost and cannot find her way home.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This reassuring tale of a little lost pig is sure to appeal to young children. Hedgehog is comfortably settled one evening when she hears someone outside at her front gate. But her search yields nothing. Later, when she and her friend Pig are about to have a meal, a forlorn little girl pig knocks at the door. Hedgehog makes her welcome, Pig gladly gives her his bowl of soup, and she falls sound asleep. Early the next morning they begin a search for piglet’s mother. All ends happily with a wonderful reunion at the bakery owned by little pig’s Mama. Everyone in town shares in the mouth-watering reward of one hundred freshly baked sweet rolls. Pig grandly announces his love for Fia (that turns out to be little pig’s name), and on the last page they walk off hand in hand. The soft, pastel illustrations are an ideal match for the text. Youngsters will enjoy pouring over the pictures to discover many interesting details such as the beautiful pink cupcakes in the bakery window that also appear in the book’s final panorama. While not necessarily a “must have” book, this is certainly a worthwhile addition to all collections for young children. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth

PreS-Gr 1
As Hedgehog and Pig are enjoying a late supper, there's a knock at the door from a tearful lost piglet. Fia is immediately whisked inside, where she is comforted and fed. When she falls asleep with her head in her plate, Pig is smitten. The next morning, they all head into the village, where Fia is reunited with her baker mother. Sweet rolls are passed around in celebration of the reunion, and Pig declares his everlasting love for the sweet little porker. This tale of a child lost and found is never threatening or frightening, despite Fia's tears. Not even her mother, crisply attired in her chef's whites, looks the worse for wear, despite her missing offspring. The illustrations and their cozy details, such as the Blue Willow teapot, the radio on a shelf in the bakery, and the spikes peaking through the shoulders of Hedgehog's peach-colored dress, contribute to an overall feeling of benevolence and goodwill. The rhyming text reads smoothly. The subplot about Pig's adoration is slightly distracting, but why quibble about a picture book that is so sweet and comforting?
