Hedwig & The Angry Inch
There's no stopping Hedwig Schmidt, everyone's favorite transsexual rock star, now that HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, last year's most unlikely off-Broadway hit, has been transformed into the most surprising original cast album of 1999. Author-star John Cameron Mitchell and composer-bandleader Stephen Trask have concocted a sublimely surreal, bracingly rebellious tale that takes aim at America's cultural wasteland, and then jacks up the volume. Featuring the exquisite noise of the rock band Cheater, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the heaviest, most audacious and fully integrated rock musical yet. The fabulous score channels pop music culture of all shapes and sizes, from the primal-scream slam of "Tear Me Down" and the mutilated thrash of "Angry Inch" to the Beatles-esque "Long Grift" and the sweet-as-Bee Gees "Wig in a Box," as well as the Ziggy-like apotheosis "Midnight Radio." Grab a wig and join the party.

Off-beat and clever music, served up with all the intensity of a live performance. I haven't seen the movie, so I have no bias towards the movie soundtrack. Having heard this CD versus a portion of the movie sountrack version, this "Original Cast" pressing has all the dynamic range and production quality I look for in my music.
