This edition includes updated and reorganized information from the previous edition, published in 2001.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a description of assessment techniques that are most commonly used for a wide variety of communication disorders, organized in a manner conducive to easy use and access.
Audience: Dr. Hegde is a well respected specialist, author, and instructor in speech pathology who has written this book for both students and clinical practitioners in communication disorders. This is a good reference for practitioners. I would be reluctant to use it as a course text for students in speech pathology as students require more comprehensive information and I would not like them to rely on a quick guide like this while learning about assessment techniques. However, it would be a great secondary reference or recommended purchase after completing a comprehensive program/course in assessment.
Features: This guide covers a wide variety of communication disorders and provides both definitions and assessment techniques for each of them. The best features are the organization of the content and the amount of information compiled in this easy to read format. Further, much of the material is compiled into charts that aid in understanding and quick access to a large amount of information.
Assessment: Aside from the previous editions of this book, I have not seen any reference guides like this for speech pathology. I have used more comprehensive books on specific disorder areas, but nothing that covers the breadth of disorder areas that this book does. This third edition includes several needed updates from the second edition including additional disorder areas, alternative assessment procedures, charts and tables, and informal protocols.

Meet the Author
M.N. (Giri) Hegde, PhD, is Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at California State University-Fresno. He holds a master¿s degree in experimental psychology from the University of Mysore, India, a post master¿s diploma in Medical (Clinical) Psychology form Bangalore University, India, and a doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is a specialist in fluency disorders, language disorders, research methods, and treatment procedures in communicative disorders. Widely published, Dr. Hegde has received many prestigious honors.
