Overview

Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahre (Heidi : Part I, or, Heidi's Years of Learning and Travel)
by Johanna Spyri
Heidi is a delightful story for children of life in the Alps, one of many tales written by the Swiss author Johanna Spyri. It was originally published in two parts : Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahre (Heidi's Years of Learning and Travel, or Heidi : Part I) and Heidi kann brauchen, was sie gelernt hat (Heidi Makes Use of What She Has Learned, or Heidi : Part II). It was written as a book "for children and those who love children".
Heidi is one of the best-selling books ever written and is among the best-known works of Swiss literature. Several movie and TV adaptations exist. The plot may have been suggested by a 1830 novel recently discovered written by Hermann Adam von Kamp : Adelaide, das Mädchen vom Alpengebirge (Adelaid: The Girl from the Alps)

About Project Bilingual
Project Bilingual (A division of Wolf Pup Books) is a continuing project making available great original German writers' texts along with their English translation. This edition, which offers after every original language paragraph its translation, makes both grammar and vocabulary checks as painless as possible. Idiomatic forms that could be overlooked can be easily detected.
Furthermore, large paragraphs have been broken down to much smaller units so that the check is as effortless as possible. We do hope that by reading German writers that defined the language itself or whose work permeated the German culture, you will be able to get the maximum benefit from this language series. Although this edition is not a replacement for traditional methods of learning language, it is a very powerful tool to speed up the process once you have attained the intermediate level and beyond.

Meet the Author

Johanna Spyri (12 June 1827 – 7 July 1901) was a Swiss author of children's stories, and is best known for her book Heidi. Born Johanna Louise Heusser in the rural Switzerland, as a child she spent several summers in the area around Chur in Graubünden, the setting she later would use in her novels.
Johanna Spyri had by temperament a peculiar skill in writing the simple histories of an innocent world. In all her stories she shows an underlying desire to preserve children alike from misunderstanding and the mistaken kindness that frequently hinder the happiness and natural development of their lives and characters.
Spyri died at her home in Zurich in 1901.
