Overview

The long wait is over.

In 2007, Hidden Earth: Darkness of the Light was released to critical acclaim. Terry Brooks said, "Darkness of the Light…is another quirky, intriguing, wonderful tale, filled with adventure and unexpected plot twists. No one else tells a story quite like Peter David does." Publisher’s Weekly wrote in a starred review, “Peter David (Knight Life) is a master at juggling multiple characters and plot lines...(and) breathes new life into some well-worn mythic tropes.” Booklist wrote, “An entertaining adventure whose cliff-hanger ending confirms that it launches a series.”

Indeed it did, and now the second volume—after a long, strange trip—is here.

The Earth of the future is not one you’d recognize. Creatures that had previously been thought simply myth—vampires, two-legged dragons, trolls, and nine other races—have overrun the planet and made it their own. Humanity is nearly extinct. But now the Twelve Races have discovered that their own fortunes are inextricably linked with the remnants of the human race.

As a result, a young slave girl named Jepp, who holds the key to the future of the world, is on her way to a fateful meeting with the most powerful creature on the face of the planet. Except the question isn’t what will happen when she gets there. The question is whether she’s going to make it there alive.

For fans of Darkness of the Light (newly available as a trade paperback and also, for the first time, as an eBook), Heights of the Depths introduces new races and answers questions about some of the previous ones, including the truth behind the mysterious Serabim, the dreaded Travelers, and even the Overseer himself. For newcomers, you are about to enter an exciting world that is both comfortably familiar…and disturbingly nightmarish.

HORRIBLY DISAPPOINTING! Although I would have given this book a 5 star rating due to the depth of characters, the plot and the author's writing ability, I find it extremely insulting to be held hostage to the final chapter of the book by being required to purchase the author's next book. (Not yet available) The people who purchased this book should not be required to purchase another to get the final chapter. We have already paid for the story! Unfortunately these types of sales tactics have probably stopped me from ever puchasing another book by this author. Mr. David, please stop releasing a book before you've written the final chapter with a difinitive ending for your audience. We would be happy to purchase your books on your writing abiltiy alone, we don't need the arm bending sales tactics.

    Must Have!

I love this book. It's the second in the series. The characters are engaging and the book is well worth it's money. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

    Minosaurs, Firedraques, Serabim, and Hoomans!

Book two of the Hidden Earth series keeps the momentum of book one and adds to it. There are new characters adding to the adventure and none of them disappoints. There are some villains that are really bad, and some that are doing the best they can with the tools they have (ok so maybe they aren't so villainy). I loved this book more than the first, because I already had an investment in their story. Peter David is a master at character development - his characters have depth and add to it with each page.

This is a story of survival, high adventure (on land, sea, and air). Really excited about the conclusion of this story in the Order of the Chaos.

I sincerely hope that Mr. David recovers from his stroke quickly and returns to good health, as his stories are amazing.

    Another cliffhanger.

I had expected this book to tie up all the loose ends left dangling at the end of "Darkness of the Light." Instead, it rambles on a bit, then ends with another cliffhanger and more dangling story lines. Disappointing.
