.....This is the story of the Norwegian Kings and their rise to power. There are few historical texts that compare with the drama, romance and actual facts this book describes of these distant northern land warriors.. The book takes you from the very first known Kings up through the end of the Viking Age. So much was actually known of these men and their valiant efforts at taming the seas. The savage Viking conquests are covered in some detail and the actual events that transpired between the characters, as well. I remember reading the book while I was on Froya a small island off the west coast of Norway. There were very strong winds casting creaks on the house I was staying. I read through the night of the brave men that traveled those seas, whipped by the very winds I experienced in the comfort of a well insulated Norwegian home... Imagine the memories of times gone by, when reading this historical in the very midst of the cruel winds of the Norwegian sea. Those very same winds swept over those Viking long ships that crossed the seas even at night. It was awe inspiring. It brought to reality the severe hardships they faced in those times If ever one wanted to know the respect these men deserved...it would be with this book which is so perfectly documented by the well known historian of Norwegian Sagas... Snorre Sturelson. He lived in those times and was able to bring first hand the accounts of that dangerous and mortifying era. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who values history and desires most ardently to know the Viking era and all of it's mysteries and glories...you will never regret it's purchase... After the Bible... this Heimskringla was the most memorable book I have ever read. Jesse Jr
