Editorial Reviews

The New York Review of Books
“Manvell and Fraenkel have produced...biographies of Goebbels, Goering, Himmler, and the men who tried to kill Hitler in 1944....To the best of my knowledge there are no better biographies in existence.”

Excellent biography of Heinrich Himmler, the man

A well-documented, pervasive, in-depth look at Heinrich Himmler, the second most feared man in Nazi Germany. After reading this biography, I feel I can now better comprehend how genocide took place in a civilized 20th-century nation. Without condoning his diabolical beliefs, the authors were able to explain Himmler's life and actions by putting together his words as well as testimony of those close to him. I recommend this book to those who are baffled by the rise of Nazi Germany and the atrocities committed there and want answers. You won't find details of the horrific crimes, as it is intended for students of history not gore-seeking readers.

    A Naive Madman

After reading this Heinrich Himmler would not be the first man you would place in the position of power he served. He does not seem dynamic or forceful, but rather timid and naive. He was every bit as devious as every other Nazi in power with a flair to get what he wanted. He was no doubt cunning with the ability to promote himself. Perhaps his rise to power was because he did not seem a threat to anyone.

This book covers Himmler's life to his death at his own hand while being held by the British. Even then he thought he position in the Nazi party would save him. Well written and researched I would have liked to see more photos, but failing that the book is a must read for anyone interested in the history or World War II.

Heinrich Himmler, was an individual that during his life in Germany grew into a man of many ideals. Many of these ideas although may be seen as true evil to most of the world, were in fact what Himmler felt was the right thing to do.

This book is inspiring only because by reading this book do you only begin to realize the true responsibility everyone should play in not condemning a person due to color, gender, religion, or otherwise. History has shown us the ultimate sacrifice many souls made due to one man's vision for his country, and beliefs. Strangely enough this book also begins to show us that many whom regarded him to be a monster, also actually shows a human side to Himmler and the pain that his decisions inflicted upon him. This however does not excuse an individual for escaping his/her crimes. After reading this book I believe you will walk away more aware of the ultimate responsibility everyone should play towards one another and not be so quick to judge(Persecute/Exterminate).
