    Better than expected

Wasn't sure when I purchased this book, but turned out to be a good read. Entertaining, quirky, and light.

    Loved the concept!

Great book! I have seen this series before, but didn't know about the premise. Glad I decided to take a chance! Can't wait for the next one.

    My favorite book!

This is a wonderful book! I read all four in about a month. It is about 200-245 pages long. All if the books are! Judi is a wonderful author! I am a picky reader and I loved this book! It is perfect for people who love dogs and a good mystery!

    Next, please! :-)

I'm finally getting caught up on my reviews...this was another very enjoyable outing from "Triple E" and her canine charges. As one who'd LOVE to know what her dogs are thinking, I thoroughly enjoy the "conversations" between Ellie and the dogs. From Mr. T to the "non-English speaking" Chihuahuas (can't wait for more on those two...this could be interesting...LOL!), I love eavesdropping on the chats. I was ready for "Death In Show" as soon as I finished this one!

A note...I've read some pretty negative reviews of various books in this series on several sites. I admit I don't understand the vehemence in some of them. I've finally decided a big part of it is whether you're a "dog person" or not...if you have a dog that's part of your family, you'd love to know what he/she/they think(s) and you enjoy the chat between "Double E" and her charges. All I'm saying is if you're on the fence, just relax and give Ellie a chance. :-)

    I Also Recommend:

    Quirky and fun to read!

As a pet sitter and dog walker, I enjoy the Dog Walker Mystery Series. It's fun to get the dogs' perspective of people and situations. My only complaint with Heir of the Dog, and it's a small complaint, was that Judi said the vet (Dr. Dave?) was a bit horizontally challenged. I believe she meant that he was vertically challenged in that he's shorter than the ladies. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it!

    I Also Recommend:

    Can't wait for more!

Ellie Engleman is a dog walker in NYC. She and com padre Rudy are minding their own business and stumble upon a murder. The second time Ellie has been in the wrong place at the wrong time and the victim leaves all of his worldly belongings to her dog Rudy. It is a page turner and the second book in the series. More adventure with Ellie and Rudy. Fortunately detective Sam Ryder is back to make life even more interesting for Ellie. Now I have to patiently wait until June for "Death in Show".

    more from this reviewer

It is rare that one can label an amateur sleuth precious, but HEIR OF THE DOG fits that description to a T

She makes a very nice living walking dogs for people too busy to do so; as a professional dog walker, Ellie Engleman takes out her canine friends twice a day. Ellie has the added advantage of being able to telepathically communicate with her pooch pals who would kill or die to protect her.

While walking in Central Park with her terrier mix Rudy, he escorts her to the dwelling of a homeless person Gary who she on friendly terms with. He is dead with his body riddled by bullets. One of Gary's friends, a dirty water hot dog vender gives her an envelope from Gary. The NYPD lead detective questions Ellie in the station's interrogation room and implies she is a suspect. Also in the room is Sam Ryder who knows Ellie intimately after a one night stand; though he never called her again as he fears the emotions she surfaces in him. He gets her released into his custody. The envelope contains a will that leaves everything to Rudy with Ellie as executor. They open Gary's safety deposit box finding $800,000. An internet search leads to learning Gary's older brother killed their parents and Gary testified against his sibling who is now out of jail after thirty years of incarceration. A letter Gary left insists if he is murdered, his brother killed him; he also asks Ellie to find him and see justice done.. Sam knows Ellie will put herself in danger to fulfill her friend's death wish; he plans to keep her safe.

It is rare that one can label an amateur sleuth precious, but HEIR OF THE DOG fits that description to a T. Ella and her dogs are cute and charming, but Rudy is precious and charming. The hint of romance between the dog walker and the detective adds depth to her inquiry as he cannot leave her probe without him. The whodunit has a sense of canine whimsy yet is a strong investigative thriller as Judi McCoy's magic misery tour of Manhattan is a winner.
