From Chapter One: What are heirloom flowers?

WHICH FLOWERS ARE HEIRLOOMS

What may be a treasured heirloom to your community may be ignored by another. Some heirlooms are endangered, some are widely grown. Many heirlooms are species, but not all. Some of our carliest heirlooms had been subject to selection for centuries in the Far and Middle East before the plants were carried here on trade routes. The first chrysanthemum to arrive in Europe from China was already far removed from the simple daisy-like Chrysanthemum indicum, which had seen human intervention since the T'ang Dynasty (618-902AD). The first azalea to come from China in 1808 was the wild scarlet-flowered form, but whites, oranges, purples, and doubles followed rapidly. And although simplicity is often a trait of ancient heirlooms, not all double flowers are new introductions. Double-flowered and striped camellias could be seen by the earliest explorers in China.

Broad sweeping generalizations are impossible, but a few traits recur. Heirlooms tend to be more fragrant than their modern counterparts. Many are taller and more like their wild predecessors -- heirloom narcissus look ill-kempt beside the newest hybrids. Colors may be more subdued in older flowers -- for example early clivias were "flesh-colored", a far cry from the screaming oranges we find today. In general, flower palettes have increased with time and interest. Certainly, heirloom roses tend to have a more subtle blush than some of the newer hybrids. They blend easily with one another.

The form of early blossoms may be less finely honed, and heirlooms often sport fewer flowers in an umbel, Bloom span can be brief. Aboveall, they tend to be more disease resistant. After all, weeds are some of the hailest and hardiest plants known to mankind.
