Heirloom - something precious handed from one generation to the next.

Asked by my daughter and her friend what the "heirloom" in heirloom tomato meant, I pondered explaining plant reproduction. Thankfully though, my friend (and the other mom in the conversation) said "it is something precious handed from one generation to the next". Oh was I glad she was there to explain that one! And Amy Goldman's loving explanations of the many tomatoes she's decided to cover in this book is much like that, a loving handing down of precious information. The photos are "portraits". The descriptions are well researched, yet personal with her own experience. Experience with starting seedlings, growing and transplanting, using the tomatoes and saving the seeds. Recipes, histories, it reads like a novel the first time through and like a reference manual afterwards when you want to find that perfect addition to next year's garden. Her respectful, close tributes to some of the 'giants' in the heirloom tomato world is wonderful too. I'd highly recommend this one for the gardener's home library and for gift giving.

Good beginning reading for serious tomato growers.

This book is an excellent text to teach you the language of raising heirloom tomatoes. Amy is a dedicated heirloom grower and for the amateur grower, she gives much valuable information. This is a good bible for tomato growers. When you find tomatoes you like, Amy's book gives you the language to be able to talk about them.
