Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
A young girl falls in love with a long-since abandoned, broken-down, Hudson Hornet automobile that smells of cigar smoke and imagination. The girl luxuriates in her imaginary travels in that old car, until one day it is taken away from her by a collector bent on restoring it to its former glory. It's a quirky premise, but then so are the girl, her parents, and the collector who ultimately restores not only the car but the girl's dreams as well.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-A Hudson Hornet slowly disintegrates in a backyard shed. Solitary five-year-old Helen loves the old car, plays in it, naps in it, and uses it to jumpstart her imaginary travels-a sort of four-wheeled magic carpet. Helen's parents unload the vehicle on a classic-car buff without a pang, but for the year aterward, Helen's gears lock every time she remembers the way the Hudson looked and smelled. The child is restored to smooth running order when the collector returns to give her a ride in the now-restored car. There's no drama, so no dramatic unity. The print is too small and the lines of type too long for beginning readers. Big pastel illustrations show Dick and Jane's world polished up for resale.-Lillian N. Gerhardt, School Library Journal
Leone McDermott
Girl meets car, girl loses car, girl finds car in this story of an unusual relationship. The object of Helen's affection is an old, broken-down Hudson Hornet marooned in her parents' garage. Helen is intrigued by its smoky interior and the grin of its wide chrome grille. Most of all, she loves sitting behind the wheel and "driving" to the places of her imagination. But one day, her parents sell the aqua-and-yellow antique to a stranger. Helen spends months mourning her friend. Fortunately, on a dizzily lovely spring morning, the car's new owner brings it back for a visit. Helen sees her beloved Hornet in its restored glory and finally goes for a real and thrilling ride in it. The large pastel watercolors keep Helen and her feelings in tight focus, with a soft dreaminess that echoes the magic of her imaginary rides. The book will particularly interest those seeking gender balance in materials on children and cars.
