Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - K. Meghan Robertson
Geared to a younger reader, this abbreviated telling of Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta, uses a large font and vivid descriptions paired with illustrations to bring the story to life. Helen of Troy's story has become more recognizable from television shows and Hollywood portrayals, so this rendition provides the details in a basic way for young students to gain enough information about Helen's abduction by Paris and the war that ensued. The inset portions within each chapter, while meant to add to or clarify parts of the chapter, are a bit visually distracting; however, the facts are interesting, vocabulary understandable, and pronunciation guides beneficial, particularly for a young reader or someone new to mythology. This book would be a nice addition to elementary and middle school libraries, and classroom collections, especially that of a language arts, history, or culture/introduction to Latin teacher. This is part of the "Queens and Princesses" series. Reviewer: K. Meghan Robertson
