Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis foi um escritor brasileiro. Considerado o melhor escritor brasileiro, não pertencendo a nenhuma escola literária (diz-se que seu estilo é puramente machadiano) escreveu obras memoráveis, como Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas, Dom Casmurro, Quincas Borba e vários livros de contos, entre eles, Papéis avulsos, no qual se encontra uma das maiores obras-primas da literatura universal, o conto (ou novela) O Alienista, que discute a loucura. Também escreveu poesia e foi um ativo crítico literário, além de ser um dos criadores da crônica no país. Foi o fundador da Academia Brasileira de Letras.
