Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
One of the most familiar events in an emergency or rescue situation is the arrival of the rescue vehicle with its sirens, flashing lights, blaring horns, and in this case, whirling blades and rushing wind. Bodden describes the rescue helicopter in short sentences with key vocabulary words highlighted in red that are defined in the short glossary at the end of the book. A great deal of the information is in the vivid photographs which show the helicopters being prepared for departure, in flight and loading rescued persons. The use of photographs that span a two-page spread combined with smaller images inset above the text adds variety and interest. The history of the helicopter as it developed as a rescue vehicle, and the supplies and gear associated with helicopter rescue, are also explained in the five brief chapters. Along with the glossary, the book concludes with a list of related books titled "Read More," a list of internet resources, and an index. This book, one of the "Rescue Vehicles" series, would be a good resource in a pre-school or elementary school classroom or library. Reviewer: Hazel Buys
